Middle School

• Went to middle school in Portsmouth where Barry met his long-time best friend Charlie (they met in 1957)

• Charlie was a very popular guy at the middle school Barry went to and as the new guy Barry didn't know much about the school and didn't know anyone coming from Canada

• Charlie took it upon himself to take Barry under his wing and show him the ropes about what school in America is really like

Boarding Catholic School

• Barry was sent to a Catholic boarding school due to a situation with Bob Stuart and his not wanting Barry in the house 

• Charlie and Barry were both at the school and often got into trouble together

  • • • They bonded the most while running away from the school

      • They would get locked outside in the cold and switch around jackets 

      • Barry described it as not a fun place to be

• After Ethel divorced Bob Stuart, Barry and her moved to various parts of southern New Hampshire

High School

• Barry went to high school from 1956-1960 and after graduating moved to Boston to live 

Radio Broadcasting

• Attended Cambridge School of Radio/TV Broadcasting for a year and got a diploma 

• Then after, started working in various jobs (working 60-70 hrs a week), radio stations, newspapers 

• Then he realized that he “was not going to make my fortune by working at these small radio stations”

College

• Therefore, he went to school at Boston University in Massachusetts in the afternoon and summertime, and did so for five years, graduating in 1965

Meeting Grandma

• Along the way, Barry had a dance at MIT, where he met my grandma, and fell in love

Graduate Fellowship

• One of the professors in the School of Public Communications at BU had taken up a position as chairman of the journalism department at Oklahoma State University. They offered Barry a graduate fellowship
