Although the language is similar and English is spoken in both Australia and the United States, there are enough differences that make it difficult at times
Another difficulty was when Barry was growing up, he didn't know the sports played in the United States. He knew rugby and cricket and tried to learn baseball and football but because he didn't grow up with those sports, he had trouble getting the hang of them
Barry also explained that having his accent was one of his biggest difficulties with immigrating to the US. He explains that kids at school “would laugh and they would make fun of my accent and so I lost my Australian accent very very quickly because I wanted to fit in”
Barry states that you “can take the boy out of Australia but not Australia out of the boy”
He adds, “I can't listen to the Star Spangled Banner, without getting tears in my eyes because I love this country so much and it's given me so much and it gave him a great life. And in turn, we were able to pass this along to your mom and to your uncle and then of course passed on to you”
Thank you so much Barry Maughan for your thoughtful insights about your incredible immigration story.
