Life in Ireland

"As much as he loved his family and home, America was a fresh start for him." - Ciara Bannon

Cave Ireland

Chipper is from a small village called Cave in the County of Galway in Ireland, represented by the blue dot on this map. Cave is just 0.92 square miles, Needham, for reference, is 12.7 square miles.

Work

Chipper would do small trade jobs for other people and be miserable in the cold wet constant rain.

He made most of his money growing up as an apprentice to masons in the area.

Chipper's family kept a farm so he fed and bathed the animals they had.

He relied heavily on the Salvation Army and other thrift stores for clothes and furniture.

Food

In Ireland, they ate many of the same foods like stew and black and white pudding (left), roast, and curry and when he came to America, he introduced many of the foods to his friends. He also tried new American foods.

Family

Chipper had many siblings who stayed in Ireland. His last day in Ireland was his sister's wedding.
