Carel came to the United States for the first time in 1994, when he was 18. He began his college education at the University of the Free State and finished his law degree at the University of South Africa. During this summer, he would travel to the United States for summer jobs. While discussing his experience leaving South Africa, he said, "I was excited. I was nervous. There were a lot of cultural differences, but overall it was very exciting as an 18 year old." As exciting as this experience was for him, his reasoning for leaving is not so simple.
As apartheid South Africa came to an end, the government pushed new affirmative action policies. Affirmative action is a solution created by the government to make up for effects of long-standing discrimination against certain groups. One primary policy that was put into action was more job opportunities being given to people of color. Carel explains that the policies were "very necessary," but it also led to struggles for him and his family. As Carel hunted for a job in South Africa, affirmative action stood in his way. When he discovered a summer job opportunity in the United States, working at a tennis resort in Massachusetts, he took it. Eventually, he was offered a full time position and decided to stay in the United States.
Carel began his trip at the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa. He flew on Egypt Ariways because it was the cheapest option for him.
From Johannesburg, Carel flew to the Cairo International Airport in Cairo, Egypt.
After his short layover, Carel landed at the John F. Kennedy International Airtport in Queens, New York.

Carel landed at JFK. He had to go through customs which he explained was, " nerve racking" and then he took the subway to the Port Authority bus station. There, he boarded a Peter Pan bus and rode it to Saugerties, New York. Carel said, "I had to rent a motel room for $32, which I didn't really have..." When he finally got to Total Tennis, the resort he was working at for the summer, he was so jet-lagged he instantly fell asleep.
