“I enjoyed that it had a very outdoorsy culture. Your sport, your socializing, almost everything was done outside. Since the winters didn't get that cold and weren’t that long you would also have unbelievable gardens and vegetable gardens and fruit gardens and everything is focused on the outdoors.”

Carel and his family adored spending time outside. From cricket, climbing trees, and roughhousing to grilling, eating and chatting, everything they loved happened outside. One of his favorite things from his childhood is a form of grilling called braai. It is the practice of cooking meat on an open flame. This is something that Carel truly misses doing and with each visit to South Africa he looks foward to braai with his family.
