Elyon Christian School is a private Christian International School in Surabaya that aims to create a supportive and challenging learning environment that inspires students to reach their full potential. Our first stop was the chapel where we were warmly welcomed by the school leaders and students. Then we followed our buddies and attended different subject lessons. We also played an engaging game of floorball at the gym, allowing us to bond over a sport.
Interesting subjects offered
Elyon Christian school offers a variety of subjects, some of which are not offered in Singapore’s secondary schools. Besides English, the students take Mandarin and Indonesian, Sciences, Arts as well as other interesting subjects. Two examples of these are business and sociology. These subjects teach students practical and useful skills that will be able to help them in their future careers. The students are trained in these skills at a younger age, which gives them a head start to pursue their passions.
Teachers with industrial experience
The teachers hired at Elyon Christian School have valuable experiences in their specialized areas. For instance, one of the business teachers is actually an entrepreneur outside of her teaching career and was able to bring her experiences into the lessons, leaving us engaged and also allowing for greater understanding of the subjects at a more practical level. The same goes for some other teachers in the school as well, who were able relate the lesson content to real life applications, nurturing the students to be critical thinkers and getting them to apply knowledge learnt in their daily lives.
The Cedarians and Elyoners had an enjoyable game of floorball. The two rounds of floorball helped the students to foster their school spirit. They were able to work together and learn from each other. The teams strategically planned their game, resulting in a lively competition. While the Elyon Christian School students had never been trained in floorball before, they did their best and persevered. The students from Cedar also worked hard, with great passion in this sport that they had previously learnt in school. Both matches ended in a draw, but the experiences gained from them were valuable for all the students.
