A consolidation of my leadership journey in Saint Andrews Junior College
ChrySAlis Student EXCO 2024 ended my leadership journey in St. Andrews Junior College with a bang. ChrySAlis is SAJC's signature annual leadership summit curated to foster the growth of Saints to become servant leaders as well as to inspire collaboration between diverse individuals, thus being able to be part of the Executive Committee has enabled me to grow in many ways.
From learning to develop grit through perserving through the many days of vigourous planning, to learning to step out of my comfort zone to challenge my public speaking abilites, ChrySAlis has served as a monumental avenue for me to not only develop my leadership capabilites, but to also foster my personal growth. I learnt that there are many leadership styles, and we often have to utilise different types of leadership in different situations. Most notably, ChrySAlis has taught me the importance of learning to trust others when it comes to doing work, which was something I struggled with at the start.
Of course, this journey would not have been possible if not for the Student EXCO team who I had the privilege of working alongside with. Being blessed with the opportunity to work alongside passionate, determined and caring student leaders, all with the goal of ensuring that SAJC can be built into a home of servant leaders has motivated me to go further and beyond. Without them, I would not have been able to challenge my leadership capabilites and grow as a more competent leader.
With this year's theme, "Be the Light," serving the school as student leaders who embody this principle has been a dream come true. If given the opportunity again, I would not hesitate to serve the school once more and continue to be a guiding light for our community.
Being able to undertake this leadership opportunity as a Service Director served as a notable experience for me to develop my leadership capabilites, as well as my personal growth. Having not given the opportunity to lead prior to my nomination, I struggled to adapt and adjust to the demands of what it meant to be a leader. However, despite these challenges, the team that I worked with served to be instrumental in enabling me to work towards my leadership goals, and supported me whenever I needed help. Ultimately, the key takeaway that I learnt was to be accountable for your tasks and always to consider multiple perspectives when it came to planning events.
As a means to contribute more to the class community, I signed up to be Peer Support Leader for my class 23S18 in 2024. I undertook this opportunity such that I could forge closer relations with my peers in class. From making fortune cookies to getting the class to write well-wishes, I leveraged on this opportunity to forge closer connections with my peers through bonding activites. Overall, this experience has enabled me to understand the class better, and form closer relations with my peers outside my friend group.
As a foundational precursor to ChrySAlis 2024, the Student's Leader Retreat served as a pivotal opportunity for me to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of effective leadership. Having actively engaged in various training sessions, with a primary focus on the establishment of a conducive "safe space" for participants, I learnt to strike a balance between task-oriented and relationship-oriented approaches while facilitating a group of my peers over the course of the two-day retreat.
The lead-up to the actual event involved numerous late-night sessions dedicated to refining and organising activities. The successful execution of these endeavors would not have been feasible without the unwavering support of a team comprised of like-minded individuals who shared a fervent commitment to serving the college and our peers. Despite our team having been formed a mere 1-2 months prior to the Student's Leader Retreat, the expeditious development of close-knit bonds among us became apparent.
Presently, if one were to inquire within the group, it is evident that we can collaborate seamlessly and comfortably, having overcome any initial challenges associated with our brief acquaintance. Despite the divergence in our individual leadership styles, we assimilated the importance of setting aside our disparities to collaboratively achieve our predefined objectives. Ultimately, the Student's Leader Retreat 2023 culminated in a successful outcome, marking the triumph of our collective efforts and serving as a testament to our ability to orchestrate a cohesive team performance during our inaugural endeavor.
In my capacity as the Head of Carnival for my CCA's Bintan Overseas Learning Programme (OSLP), I undertook the responsibility of meticulously planning engaging games and ensuring seamless logistical arrangements. While navigating the intricacies of this role, I encountered a few challenges, notably the shortage of committee members available for the OSLP. However, my team and I adeptly adapted to the situation, enlisting the participation of other CCA mates who were not part of our committee to assist in executing the games.
Throughout the event in Bintan, I derived immense satisfaction from serving my committee, knowing that our thorough preparations and resourcefulness contributed to its overall success. The experience was both gratifying and enjoyable, further solidifying my commitment to delivering exceptional outcomes in future endeavors.
Being a facilitator in Chrysalis 2023 proved to be an exceptionally impactful and unforgettable experience. Throughout this role, I delved deep into the intricacies of effective leadership and gained valuable insights into the practical application of the SAINTS model, which significantly enhanced my ability to articulate ideas with clarity and precision.
Admittedly, my journey as a facilitator was not without its challenges, especially considering it was my first time assuming such a responsibility. However, I seized this opportunity as a valuable learning experience, drawing upon the expertise and wisdom of my more experienced peers within the Student Council and Saints for Christ community.
The intensive three-day program and rigorous training we underwent were instrumental in equipping me with the requisite skills and knowledge to adeptly facilitate group interactions. The enjoyable nature of the process further fueled my enthusiasm for personal growth and development in this capacity.
The Service Learning Convention serves as a meticulously orchestrated affair by Saints Advocate, aiming to offer J1 SLEAD Activists a wellspring of inspiration pertaining to the forthcoming Service Learning Day later in the year, alongside imparting the quintessence of leadership acumen. Capitalizing on my recent ChrySAlis training during this interval, I adeptly harnessed the acquired proficiencies and adeptly applied the SAINTS model, thereby orchestrating a pedagogically effective dissemination of knowledge amongst my peers.
While this experience offered a mere glimpse into the trajectory awaiting me within the ambit of ChrySAlis, I derived immense satisfaction from the endeavor. This occasion not only facilitated the honing of my skills but also engendered the forging of new alliances, thereby augmenting the multifaceted rewards of my participation.
Serving as a student facilitator during the Blood Donation Drive marked my inaugural foray into assuming a leadership position in the year 2023. Confronted with the novel challenge of effectively leading, I capitalised on the expertise of my peers and seasoned mentors, thereby acquiring essential insights into the art of leadership.
While my immediate responsibility encompassed orchestrating the orderly guidance of students, teachers, and parents towards the designated venue for the blood donation initiative, as well as to man booths, the experience was a blend of trepidation and gratification. The opportunity to take charge in the company of kindred spirits, all driven by a shared ambition to facilitate and steer others, was both formidable and personally enriching. While I refrained from participating in the actual blood donation process on this occasion, the prospect of engaging in such an endeavour in the future holds a palpable sense of anticipation.
