My name is Salena Herrera, and I am a recent graduate of Dominican University of California with a B.S. in Biological Sciences, and minors in Community Action and Social Change and Chemistry. Through all my academic, leadership, and volunteer experiences as an undergraduate I am eager to expand upon my skillset and seek a career that will challenge me. I consider myself a "forever student" and I am eager to build on my academic foundations in science and community service. In addition, I want to be able to grow as a professional and become exposed to different work environments and colleagues.
On a personal level, I am originally from Hayward, California, which is located in the East Bay, and about an hour drive away from Dominican. However, upon graduating from Dominican I decided to stay in San Rafael where I enjoy exercising and exploring San Francisco with friends.
Why I Chose Dominican
When looking at colleges my senior year of high school I was looking at small private universities to attend. My school counselor suggested Dominican University of California, and when I visited the school I automatically fell in love with the beautiful campus. I also enjoy how the class sizes are small, which provides students and teachers to work together one-on-one more often. This type of collaboration between the student and teacher was important to me when picking a university because as a student I work better in smaller class sizes where the professors can customize instruction according to their class size and give students their undivided attention.
Undergraduate Leadership
I was an active student on Dominican's campus as I have joined several leadership groups and was also involved in the service learning program, which has allowed me to volunteer my time within Marin's community. The first leadership group I joined, TORCH, has helped me enrich and develop new leadership skills, while formulating new connections with my peers and professors. Through my experiences with TORCH, it had given me the foundation and confidence to join other leadership groups on campus such as peer mentorship and student government. Furthermore, I also was a teacher assistant and a digital portfolio facilitator for the Natural Sciences and Mathematics department at Dominican.
In regards to volunteering, I have been able to volunteer at Laurel Dell Elementary School, Young Mom's Marin, and Marin Community Clinics in San Rafael. Through all of these opportunities it has allowed me to learn more about Marin's community and has allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone.
