During Spring semester of 2021, I will be student teaching 9th Grade Modern World History at Rancho Cotate High School . Rancho Cotate is an amazing school and I am very excited to be doing my student teaching fieldwork here. Below are some of the assignments and projects that we have worked on in class thus far.

Each unit is organized step by step to eventually lead up to an engaging and creative summative assignment which will conclude the unit.
In Step 1 for my unit on Industrialization, I started by showing students a Flocabulary video to them familiarized with some of the vocabulary used in this unit.
Step 2 involved taking notes on different aspects of the Industrial Revolution. Asking questions such as; what was the Industrial Revolution? How did society react to these changes? How did industrialization occur in Japan compared to England?
In step 3, I asked the students to explore what life would be like had they been born 200 years ago in Manchester. This assignment helps make the topic relevant and authentic as students need to reflect on what would be different in their lives and what would be similar or the same.
Step 4 looks at Manchester in the 1800s and asks students to compare and contrast the lives of Working Class people and Middle Class people during the Industrial Revolution as well as identify the driving forces and effects of urbanization in Britain.
Finally, Step 5 is where I had students choose an impactful innovation from the Industrial Revolution and create an Infomercial about the machine of their choice. Showing Billy Mays examples had the students very enthused to create their own infomercial.
My Modern World History class is part of the Film Academy at Rancho and so my directing teacher and myself work closely with our student's Film teacher to create assignments that will appeal to our students needs and interests.
Collaborative learning is an essential part of my History class and while working collaboratively in person will always be the best, we found engaging ways to work together using Google slides and Jamboard.
Having each group work on their own slide in a collaborative Google Doc has been a very successful way of working together remotely this school year.
Below are some examples of Jamboards that we worked together on as a class. I find that this is a great warm up or review activity to get your students ready for the day's lesson.
Identifying the central idea of excerpts and political cartoons are skills that are practiced in my class a lot. To help students formulate their responses, I provide sentence frames in both English and Spanish to assist my students.
In my class I try to include current events to make the conversation relevant, new, and authentic. One assignment that we did was to watch a CNN 10 video and use this graphic organizer to practice the skill of contextualization.
