My name is Bonnie Collins, and I am a student at Dominican University of California pursuing my single subject teaching credential in English and Social Studies. My interest in education began when my grandmother would tell me about her childhood in rural Colorado where her mother taught in a one room schoolhouse. The schoolhouse was also their home and I loved hearing my grandmother tell me about tending the fire late through night. She became a lifelong educator, and my interest in teaching continued with the influence of incredible high school English teachers. My interest in working with adolescents, specifically, sprang up in college when I began camp counseling and volunteering at a nearby high school in an afterschool program.
My student teaching and fieldwork has been in 6th grade at San Jose Middle School in Novato. I will finish the 2021-2022 school year in a long-term substitute role at Terra Linda High School. In this role, I will teach 3 ELD classes and 2 Identity and Social Justice classes.
I graduated with my B.A. in English Comparative Literature from University of Colorado, Boulder in 2016. A few things I love to do in my free time: cook, read memoirs, watch (reality!) television and take long walks through downtown Mill Valley with my partner and dog. A part of my heart lives in the Central Coast of California, and I love to visit my family and friends in my hometown, Ojai, when I get the chance.
