Intro to Studio Art

Hand Drawing

For my first project, I drew my hand holding a screwdriver. I chose to hold this tool, but I quite honestly didn't think about how hard it would be to draw. At first, my measurements were all off and I thought the entire thing would go to shambles, but Mr. Langmaack helped me out on a few lines. Other than the fact that my screwdriver head was crooked and unattached to its body, I think I did pretty well. The shading was all right, and my fingers don't look too weird. I used pencils, a kneaded eraser, and a blending stump to make this piece. I achieved my goal, which was to make a realistic drawing of a hand, and I think a lot of people liked it. If I were to do this again, I'd fix my proportions a bit.

Bug Painting

For my acrylic bug painting, I chose to paint a beetle on a branch. I chose this because I loved the color scheme and I thought I could do a good job on it. I think I pulled it off! I used acrylic paints and assorted paintbrushes to make this piece, and I painted it off a reference picture. The paint was a little sticky and hard to work with, but once I figured it out the process went a lot more smoothly. If I were to do this again, I would choose a different background color -- the blue doesn't really stand out against the blue-green bug.

Clay Jar

For this project, I chose to make an abstract clay jar. I chose this because I like thinking outside the box and creating things I normally wouldn't. I used clay, paintbrushes, and different-colored glazes to make this jar. It would have probably looked better if I'd finished the paint job all in one go and if I hadn't dropped the pot before firing it. If I were to do this again, I would choose a less ambitious design so it would be easier to finish.

Clay Bowl

For this project, I made a flower bowl out of ropes of clay. I chose this because I liked the design and I thought I could accomplish it effectively. I used clay, assorted carving tools, and glaze to make this bowl. One thing I struggled with was accounting for the thickness of the ropes. My original design was too intricate for clay that thick, so I had to modify it a little bit. If I were to do this again, I would make the bowl equal height on all sides. I also would have cleaned up the design in the middle of the bowl a bit. I do like how it turned out, however.

Clay Whistle

For my clay whistle, I decided to make a pufferfish. I chose this because the whistle part reminded me of a pufferfish mouth and I thought it would turn out well. I used clay, assorted carving tools, and glaze to make this whistle. I couldn't get my pufferfish to whistle at first, but after an entire class period of struggling I finally got it. Something I would change is the eyes, as they were poorly glazed and fell off in the kiln because I forgot to score and slip them. I actually had to re-glue them after. I'm pretty happy with the final product, however. It's really cute!

Underwatercolor Painting

For my underwatercolor painting, I decided to paint a shark. I chose this because although I'd originally wanted to paint an octopus, the image I selected didn't fit the requirements and I had to choose a new one. I thought a shark would be fun! I used watercolor, microns, and a white gel pen to make this piece. Two things I struggled with were 1) knowing when to stop painting and 2) making sure all the lines and dots were right. I'm really happy with how it turned out, and I wouldn't change anything!

Bird Print Book

For this project, I decided to print a crane in the water. I chose this because I loved the picture I ended up going with, and I thought it would translate well onto paper. I was... not entirely impressed with the results. I used different colors of ink and paper to make this piece. Some things I struggled with were making sure water didn't interfere with my ink and getting the ink to lay smoothly on the paper. I would spend more time getting it to look the way I wanted if I were to do this again.

Spot The Differences

For my 'spot the differences' book, I chose a picture of a truck in a parking lot. I didn't have a picture on the day it was due, so I decided to take one of the parking lot adjacent to CVC :) I used Photopea to make this piece! I didn't really struggle with anything; I enjoyed it, actually! I'm happy with how this turned out and I'd love to do this again.

Copper/Foamboard Box

For this project, I made a box :) I chose this design because I loved the bright colors and the bubble letters. I used different types of foam, metal, and paper to make this box. I struggled immensely with the metal letters; they kept breaking, and now I'm wishing I'd chosen a different font to work with. I like how the box looks, other than that.
