In this project, we were told to make a personal logo. We had to create something that represented us, so that if someone were to see it, they would know who it belongs to. It didn't turn exactly as I hoped, but I am still proud of it. All of my initials are shown in this logo. BDK. On the front side that is shown here, I used book pages and then glued them down with modge podge. I did this to show my love of reading. Then I put pictures on top of it, to show how I love my family, and spending time with them. The accents of the logo are in turquoise, because that is my favorite color, and I wanted to show that. On the back side, I did splatter paint, because that is my favorite type of art. On the sides are a bunch of american flags that I painted because my dad owns American Floors, and I wanted to represent that. My favorite part were the flags. Though they took forever to paint and are not completely straight, I still like how they turned out and I think it looks cool with the rest of the logo. My least favorite part is the pictures, as I feel that I didn't put them on very good, and they look a little tacky. As one hole in the B is a D to represent my middle name, I made the other into an ice cream cone, as I could eat ice cream every day. I really enjoyed this project. I learned many new things such as how to make 3D objects out of things that are 2D, how to carve with an exacto knife, and more tips on how to properly paper machee.
In this project, we were given a foam, rectangular block. We had to find a househeld item about the size of the block, and try to replicate it. I chose a banana, as I like bananas and it was one of the few objects I had that was the right size. Cutting the block was the first step, which is where we used a saw. Once I got the hang of it, things moved pretty smoothly. The second step was to carve it. I had to use a LOT of sandpaper to get it this smooth after I had finished the basic carving with other tools. The carving turned out well, and actually looked like a banana. My favorite part was carving the stem. My least favorite part of this project was the painting. I do NOT like how it turned out that well. While it still looks very similar to a banana, the coloring is a bit off. I repainted it 4 times before I even got it this far. I went with more of a green banana, rather than brown as I don't really like brown bananas. Green is also easier to work with. While I am proud of my carving job, if I were to redo it I would spend even more time painting it. Though most people who see it, do say that it actually looks like a banana, which was the goal in the first place.
This project was a lot of fun, but also took a lot of energy. We started with a small, flat, circle of clay. Then, we added on one layer at a time through the use of clay coils, blending it along the way. Once we were done making it perfectly smooth (which was my LEAST favorite part) we finally got to start making the design. I had no clue what to do, so I got some inspiration from the people around me. It took FOREVER to get the lines right. Do you know how hard it is to draw straight lines on a surface that isn't flat. Very hard. I have no clue how Mr Langmaack makes it look so easy. After the design was done, our pots were fired for the first time. Then, we got to start painting with special, metalic paints. When we fired it again, the paints all melted together in a 2000 degree oven. It didn't turn out exactly like I thought it would, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. 10/10 would recommend trying this project. It was a lot of fun.
