Preflection: We are going to make portraits for refugee kids because they have been taken away from their possessions and homes. We are making these as a gift for the kids to let them know they have not been forgotten about. I really like this assignment. I don't think I'll every make it out of the country to do mission work but I like that I can still use my gifts to reach kids in need.

Oil Pastel

Colored Pencil

I got to learn how to do oil pastel. I also learned about how to add all the colors in the face onto my portrait. I went for very realistic looks. I am drawing two kids, so I am using colored pencil for one and oil pastel for the other. I would love the chance to work with oil pastel for the first time and I chose colored pencil for the other kid, because I feel that it looks most realistic.

Final Portrait

My process was very lengthy because I wanted to include every single color that is found in the human face. I used many layers of yellow ochre, red, orange, and browns to create the face color. The Hair came a bit easier, but to create the highlights, I used an electric eraser first, and then went back with my black colored pencil to make the highlights more precise. I like my final piece a lot. I think it really captured the look and expression of the little boy.

Final Portrait

This was my first time using oil pastels. I started off by marking all the light spots and I felt that it was the easiest process. It was a lengthy process of blending to get the right colors but suprisingly, it took the shortest amount of time. I also like the final product of this portrait as well. I think the color of the shirt was the best option, because red is the girl's favorite color.

I hope that these two children will be super excited to see their portrait. I hope that they know that there are still people that care about them enough to sit down and understand and love what they look like in order to create a portrait of them. If I was there when the portraits get handed out, I would say to the two of them "You are beautifully created and I love you."
