A Dive Into Dance Club
By Grace Sabedra
As a high school student, it is especially important to be involved in clubs and extracurricular activities. Many athletes participate in seasonal sports for their school. Those interested in community service may join the Community Service Club, and those who aspire to be teachers in the future may be part of the FTA. Students who have a passion for dance, on the other hand, might think there are no options for them at our school. That is probably because they have never heard of the CHS Dance Club, a desirable club for motivated dancers.
The CHS Dance Club is generally new to the school, and most of the members from the original years have recently graduated, leaving the club partially ignored. That stinks since the Dance Club is very worthwhile and should be discussed more frequently. Additionally, the Dance Club has so many benefits from both a social and an educational perspective.
To begin, the CHS Dance Club isn’t just for students who are engaged in competitive dance outside the school day. It is for anyone who has a large interest in dancing to the beat, moving, or simply stepping to music. This means you can join the CHS Dance Club with no dance experience whatsoever, just a passion for moving and grooving. This information makes it obvious that the Dance Club is not competitive at all, and Mrs. Thome, the club director, welcomes anyone of any level into the club without an audition. This provides a stress-free environment, where judgment is absolutely nonexistent.
Additionally, this club is very important for someone who is trying to increase their social skills, as well as communication skills. In the CHS Dance Club, members can come in on certain weeks with their own choreography to share with the class. This requires you to get up in front of a small group of people and communicate certain steps, as well as be able to respond to questions others may have regarding the dance moves you taught. With practice, you will become really good at interacting with others, and all the time spent talking to others causes friendships to develop.
Furthermore, the Dance Club provides multiple opportunities to give back to the community. Each year, club members are able to come together and make up a small dance, which they will later present in front of the elderly in nursing homes during the holiday season. This event is such an amazing opportunity to spread joy to people who may need an extra dose of holiday cheer. It is so fulfilling to bring a smile to a face that hasn’t experienced happiness for a long period of time.
The Dance Club is also a great club to be involved in if you want to learn many important skills for your future. Some skills that the dance club will help enhance are organizational skills, problem-solving skills, and creative thinking skills. In this club, it is your responsibility to come in prepared each week, knowing exactly what will be discussed. You have to learn to check Schoology weekly and write down the dates of important events and future field trips. Obviously, being organized isn’t the easiest thing in the world, especially for a busy student, but this club encourages members to be successful in an organizational aspect. Also, in this club, sometimes things will not go as planned. For example, maybe your phone will die, which leads to your being stranded with no source of music for your choreography. Or maybe the same day there’s a Dance Club meeting, but you also have to go in early that same day to take an important test. Problems like this happen all the time, but it’s important to be able to figure out solutions. The Dance Club promotes the need to be able to figure out how to fix things when they go wrong, which encourages problem-solving. This club is also a major promoter of creativity, as members have the opportunity to teach their own choreography, which can be whatever style and level they want. Obviously, coming up with a movement to teach requires an immense amount of imagination and originality.
Overall, the Dance Club needs to be lifted out of the darkness, and students from the school should seriously consider joining. I mean, why wouldn’t you? It has so many benefits: it’s stress-free, it will help you grow socially and intellectually, and anyone in the whole school can join, no matter their level of dancing abilities. So… please consider stopping by room 119 the next time the Dance Club meets. Check the TV screens in the hallways for information regarding the Dance Club meeting times.. I promise you won’t regret trying something new. See you there!
