This week was the last week of the project. I spent this entire week rushing to get everything done. I finished my cave level, added a melee weapon, added an ai enemy system, made it so that they attack you, added a start and a finish, added sound effects, added some UI, added textures for the main island, and overall polished some stuff. My main challenge was time. I tried hard to get everything completed in time by working at home but I still had to cut a lot of what I wanted to do. The most important thing I learned this week was time management. I stayed on track from last week and more, I got to finish my game. My workflow was effective because I stayed focus even though I had little time.
Since this is the last week, I don't have any plans for next week. My project is finished, but if it is allowed, I would like to take time to finish some stuff I wanted to add, like my final level. There aren't really any skills or concepts I need to practice. The project is over so I don't see any challenges. Next week I will see what I did compared to what I was supposed to do.
This week I focused on working on one my cave side level, I finished the environment and placed crystals around and began working on the mechanics of the puzzle. My main challenge was trying to get different color models for my crystals. To overcome this, I put the textures into photoshop and changed the colors there. The most important thing I learned this week was how to use particles and lighting to create an interest environment. I mostly stayed on track with last weeks goals, I had some setbacks but made good progress. I was successfully able to focus when working. I could work on my efficiency as I wasn't super efficient when working.
Next week, I want to finish my cave sublevel and work on the melee mechanic for my last level. To make progress I need to finetune my main island and get the melee mechanic done. I need to learn how to do this, I have no idea how I am going to go about adding this. My main challenge I can see myself having would be time. I am already running low on time and will need to work at home to help me prepare for this. I'll measure my progress at the end of the week by seeing how much I was able to get done compared to what I need done.
This week my main focus was on one of my side levels I was planning on creating, I finished most of the side level and only have some small adjustments to make. My main problem I had was with a respawning boulder. The engine would crash when I tried to respawn it. To fix this I troubleshooted and instead of using the Destroyed event, I spawned the new boulder before destroying the old. The most important thing I learned this week was how to make moving objects and objects that respawn. I mostly stayed in track with my goals since I finished majority of the level I wanted to finish. I was focused this whole week and had a very effective workflow. I could improve my efficiency and organization.
Next week, I want to finish that level and make a lot of progress with a new level. To do this I would need to design a map for a new puzzle and work on some new mechanics. I need to practice my map making and mechanic making skills. I can see the melee being a problem in the future since currently I have no idea how to create a melee weapon. I can prepare for this by watching tutorials and reading documentation and figuring out ahead of time how I would implement this. Next week, I will check my progress with my goals from this week to see if it was a productive week.
This week I focused on creating some of the stuff I would need later on, I worked on adding materials for the landscape and worked on modeling an obstacle course for the desert challenge. My main challenge was finding materials that fit with the desert area, I overcame this by testing multiple materials and finding the best one. The most important thing I learned this week was how to make objects move. I was able to complete most of my goals from last week, I only need to finish with the landscape textures. Although I got distracted a lot this week, I was still able to get a lot done.
Next week, I want to add materials to the landscape and finish the desert level. To progress on this project, I need to finish some of the challenges and start working on some of the mechanics. I need to practice my blueprinting skills since I am going to need to blueprint a lot soon for some of the mechanics. My main challenge will be not knowing how to add some of the mechanics I plan to have. I can overcome this by watching tutorials and learning good ways to implement these mechanics. Next week, I will see if I finished my goals and see how much I got done.
I was able to get a bunch of stuff done this week. I imported all my assets into the game and replaced all of the placeholders with my models. I was able to finish placing almost all of the models I want scattered around the map. My main challenge this week was making the models fit with each other. Since some of the models were 3d scans and some weren't, I made all of the models look similar by bringing the textures to Illustrator and applying a 6 color image trace to reduce the realism. The most important thing I learned this week was how to place models in an environment and making it look fitting. I stayed on track with my goals from before spring break, I was able to get my goals done and more. I was focused this whole week and that was probably the best part about my workflow.
Next week, I want to finish the ground textures and start working on some of the puzzles and artifacts. To do this, I need to find and configure some ground materials, apply them to the terrain, and work on some mechanics and puzzles. I need to practice my blueprinting skills, it is one of the main skills I will be using in the future. I can see myself struggling to get all of the puzzles done in time with the deadline. I can prepare for this by working some at home and being quick with my work. Next week, I will reflect on what I accomplished and see how much I progressed through this game.
This week was great since I was able to get a lot done. I finished my asset creation assignment and have it ready to submit and I finished my portfolio and got it checked. My main challenge was finishing the asset creation and the portfolio since it is a lot of work and due this week, I just focused when in class and did some work outside of school too. The most important thing I did this week was learn how to find 3d models and make one of my own for the pre-production phase. I did stay in line with my goals from last week, I was able to complete my asset creation which was my main goal. My time management was very effective this week since I spent all of my class time working and spent some time at home working.
My goals for next week after the break are to begin work on the actual game and replace most of the placeholders. To make progress, I need to replace all of the placeholders and start working on some of the mechanics for my game. I need to practice my modeling skills and environment creation skills to prepare for my actual game making. I can see that my main challenge will be time, I can overcome this by figuring out a way to transfer files between this computer and my home computer. Next week, I will measure progress by checking if I stayed in line with all of my goals.
This quarter, I focused on the preparation and level design parts game design. I improved my skills in level design, environment creation, and organizing game ideas through documents like LDDs and GDDs. I also became more skilled with using Unreal Engine to bring my ideas to life. One of the biggest challenges I faced was making sure my designs were interesting and functional for gameplay. To overcome this, I experimented with different layouts and adjusted my designs based on feedback. I learned a lot about creating the preparation documents for designing games. All of the skills I learned this quarter could be very useful and important if I pursue a career in the game design industry.
My overall skill and knowledge of game design has improved a lot, especially when creating engaging environments. I now have a better sense of how to guide players through a level using layout, lighting, and points of interest. I also feel more confident in my ability to organize and present my ideas clearly. While I didn’t focus much on 3D modeling this quarter, the skills I learned in previous projects still helped me in creating game environments. Next quarter, I want to improve my ability to create detailed and immersive levels while also getting used to using 3D modeling to create assets again. Overall, I am happy with all of the progress I made this quarter and am looking forward to seeing what happens next quarter.
This week was very productive, even though I was sick all of last week I was able to fully complete my whitebox level. I was able to record the walkthrough at home and even mess around with some fog effects. I was also able to complete most of my art bible. My main challenge this week was being really behind from missing last week, I was able to catch up by working hard and focusing on work. The most important thing I learned this week was how to record a whitebox walkthrough, that is something I can use for years to come. I was able to do more than I planned last week, I finished my whitebox, recorded the video, and even started on my art bible. My focus was very effective this week, I was able to complete most of my work and get caught up. I could improve at working at home, I am good at working in class, I just never try to work from home.
Next week, I want to finish the art bible and start working on the actual game and level design. Tao do this, I will need to finish the art and sound design document document and begin on my asset creation for my game. I might need to practice my modeling skills since I haven't used them since last year. I see myself struggling with getting back into 3ds max and model creation. I can prepare by watching videos on it and practicing at home. I will measure my progress next week by comparing what I have achieved to my goals from this week.
I couldn’t do any work this week because I was sick with the flu. I had planned to keep working on my project, but I needed to rest and take care of myself. This was a big challenge, as I wanted to get more done. I learned that sometimes things happen that can mess up my plans, but it’s important to focus on getting better. I didn’t stay on track with my goals from last week, as I couldn’t finish the whiteboxing or start coding. I didn’t really get the chance to think about my workflow this week, but I know I should be ready for setbacks like this in the future.
Next week, I want to finish the whiteboxing and record a video of my progress. I will also try to start working on the game mechanics. I need to complete the whiteboxing and focus on making the level look and feel right. I also need to get better at designing levels to make the game more fun, not just a place to walk around. To do this, I will research games that do this well and learn from them. A challenge I might face is finding enough time to do everything, so I’ll need to stay organized. By the end of next week, I will check if I completed the tasks I planned and see if I’m on track with my project.
I do not have any screenshots to show
This week was a full week back and I was able to get a lot done. I finished making the Level Design Document and began working on the whiteboxing level for my game. I was able to create the terrain for the island and fully whitebox 2 out of the three sections. I had a few challenges that I struggled to fix, the main one being that I couldn't figure out how to make my map to scale how I wanted it. So instead of making it to scale perfectly, I made it small and then once I am done I will scale it up and decide how I want it. The most important thing I learned this week was how to whitebox a level, I was able to fully whitebox my main map and lay out placeholders for where everything would go. I did stay in track with last week's goals. My goals from last week were to finish the LDD and start on the game, I did both of these and more. I did a good job of staying on track and not getting distracted. Something that could be improved is working on it at home too, I have sports so it would be hard, but I would like to get better at organizing my time.
My main goals for next week are to finish the Whitebox and record my video walkthrough, also maybe start coding in some of the mechanics. The tasks I would need to complete would be to finish the whiteboxing, record a walkthrough video, and begin working on the actual mechanics. I definitely need to work on my level design skills. In the future, I think I will have a problem with making a stylized environment and making the game fun, instead of a walking simulator. I can prepare for this by researching games that do this well and learning from that. Next week, I will look at what I achieved this week and see if the week was on par or better than this week.
This week was a 2 day week because of snow, therefore I did not get much done. I finished the snow day gaming assignment and worked on the level design document. My main challenge was getting work done at home. I overcame the challenge by installing illustrator on my home computer and using that to make the LDD. The most important thing I learned this week was how to create an effective LDD. I was unable to do many of my goals from last week because of the weather issues but I tried to do as many of them as possible. My workflow was very ineffective, I kept on getting distracted since I was at home rather than at school. There was a lot that could be improved.
My goals for next week are to finish the Level Design Document and start working on the game itself. To make progress on the project, I would need to finish the Level Design Document and continue working on the preparation phase of the game making and start on actually using Unreal itself. As of now, I do not need to research or practice any skills or concepts since it is all stuff I know. I see the time frame as a potential challenge since it is pretty small and I have big hopes for this game, I can prepare by making some of the assets at home. At the end of next week, I will look back at this week and see what I did better and what more I could do.
Today since there was no school, I was instructed to play one video game and identify many different aspects of it. I was told to play with family, but since all of my family were away, I got on a call with some friends and played with them instead. I decided to play marvel rivals with 3 of my friends who are all really good at the game and play more than me. There are many different game modes, but all of the game modes are similar, you need to push an objective, eliminate the other team, and defend the objective. You win the game by holding the objective for a longer amount of time than the other team. One of the main mechanics of the game are the heroes. At the start of the game, you pick a hero and you play as them for the rest of the game, each hero has different weapons and abilities. Each hero also has separate walk speeds, weapons, voice actors, and abilities. The game is real time, the players choose how they want to play the game. Many players create their own strategies to win the game and others go in guns blazing. The mechanics allow players to progress towards the object by using their abilities as a team to get past the enemy players. This game is very fun because it is highly competitive, and the mechanics make the game much more enjoyable. Each game is different depending on how you play and who you play with. The mechanics really added to the enjoyment, since every character has separate mechanics and abilities. Since the game relies on players to make it entertaining, it makes for some really funny moments when playing, it is also very challenging since both teams will do their best to win. I would recommend this game for others since it is a very fun and replayable game, it is competetive and creates a fun environment for all players. My main suggestion would be to add more playable characters to the game.
This week was focused on brainstorming ideas for our PBM project and presenting them to the class. I had to come up with three ideas and make a slideshow out of them to present to the class. My main challenge of this week was coming up with the three ideas, I wanted to make a game that would be possible within the amount of time we had and would still be challenging and fun to make. I spent a lot of time thinking and I came up with one main idea which I really liked and two smaller backup ideas which I didn't really want to make as much. This week I learned how to setup a concept presentation and present it. The most important thing I learned was definitely presenting my ideas and taking critiques. I did not really have any goals from last week but if I did I think I would have followed them. My workflow was pretty efffective, I came up with the ideas as I made the slideshow and it worked very well. I do wish I had spent more time thinking about the other ideas because they didn't turn out as well.
My goals for next week are to finish the Game Design Document and start working on the game itself. To make progress on the project, I would need to finish the Game Design Document and continue working on the preparation phase of the game making. There aren't really any skills for me to research currently since all that we are doing now is stuff I have done before. My main challenge I can see for the future is managing my time, I can prepare for that by practicing it right now. I will measure progress by looking at my goals and what I have achieved and comparing it. Hopefully this next week goes well. I have attached my concept presentation below.
This week I spent a lot of time working on this project. I spent two days this week out of class helping with the 8th grade CTE tours so I was unable to work much on this project. I learned how to create landscape materials with layers to help seamlessly blend materials for the environment. I also learned how to create a detailed environment using pre-made 3d scanned objects. I feel like I understood the new tools very well since I was able to quickly create a detailed and realistic environment. I applied what I learned from the tutorial by making a canyon like terrain using the landscape tool and 3d scanned objects. I struggled with finding objects that fit in with the environment. I also used statues and other models I found online to make the canyon a religious area with many Christian figures and angel statues. The main problem I encountered was not being able to find models that fit with the vibe of the area. I overcame this problem by importing models that did not fit and making them fit in with the terrain by adding my own materials and mixing it in with other models. This tutorial connects to what I already know in this tutorial since I already used these techniques previously in the cave maze project. I would need to practice on making everything work with each other. I think I did a decent job of this but there is a lot more I can do. These techniques are very useful, I can use these skills I learned if I ever get a job in Game Design or Environment creation for video games or movies.
I spent most of this week creating an environment using the video. I learned how to make a realistic environment using models and the landscape tool. I did a good job of using the new tools to create a detailed environment. The main challenge was that quixel bridge was blocked so instead I downloaded models directly from fab.com. I used skills I already knew to create this environment. I need to practice blending the models with the landscape more seamlessly. These techniques are very useful when creating the environment for a game or movie. I did not take any screenshots this week.
This week was a one day week so we did not have a tutorial to follow. There also weren't any new tools or features for me to follow as I only did the Portfolio Check. Once again there was nothing for me to apply since there was no tutorial. The only challenge I encountered was finding a way to do the portfolio check at home. I solved this by logging on to google sites and canvas on my home computer. I did not use unreal engine at all this week. I do need to practice writing the end of quarter reflections and making it longer. I would do the same thing I did this week for every other quarter reflection and portfolio check. I will attach screenshots of the portfolio check below.
Quarter 2 was a very successful quarter for me. I was able to improve my skills in unreal engine while still being able to enjoy the projects I was making. I learned many new skills that are very important to the game design industry and are key when trying to go into a career of game design. Some examples of the skills I learned are: Blueprinting, Creating environments, and using lighting. I enjoyed all of the projects I created this quarter and even tried to go above and beyond for every project. I usually did this by adding new mechanics which were not required but still add to the game.
The maze game project really helped me learn about creating an environment for this game. In the maze game project I was able to create a stylized environment which really adds the the experience of the game. In previous quarters, I learned how to create a tabletop game and some of the aspects that are required to have an engaging tabletop game. I applied that knowledge in this quarter by using some of the same aspects to create my video games. Overall, this quarter was very successful and I hope to have more quarters like it.
