RESEARCH COURSES
INTRODUCTION TO SCIENCE RESEARCH
(Prerequisites: 3.5 in a freshman science course; 3.0 in English; 3.0 in Enriched Algebra, & Enriched Geometry or Math 10 Honors)
Motivated sophomores possessing a keen interest in science apply for admission to this highly selective program mid-way through their freshman year. Students will learn a number of basic skills required to conduct scientific research: literary search techniques, oral and written presentation skills, problem-solving, and experimental design. In time, students will develop a topic of interest that will be their focus for all three years of the program. This course is taken in addition to the core science course in which students are enrolled. Enrollment is limited to 15 students per section. At the end of the year, students present a research project proposal at Somers Science Fair and the Horace Greeley Research Symposium.
SCIENCE RESEARCH
(Prerequisites: Introduction to Science Research & a summer assignment)
Students who have completed Introduction to Science Research will take this course in their junior year. In this second year of the program, juniors search for and/or continue working with a mentor from the scientific community who will guide them in a research project. Throughout the year students will continue to explore their area of interest, and will collaborate with and provide feedback to other members of the research program. Presentation of research will occur in poster format at the Horace Greeley High School Science Research Symposium and any other competition the student has qualified for. Assessment meetings are required (occur every other cycle). Students who wish to continue in year 3 complete their research project by the end of the summer.
ADVANCED SCIENCE RESEARCH
(Prerequisites: Science Research & completion of a research project by the first day of school)
Under the guidance of a science research teacher and a research mentor, students will present their projects to the scientific community using three different formats: a 15 - 20 page paper, an oral presentation and a poster. These will be shared at the following competitions: Regeneron, JSHS, and WESEF. Participation in these competitions is mandatory. Assessment meetings are required (every other cycle). In the spring, seniors will have the opportunity to collaborate on a Senior Choice Project.
