For three years, you will embark on a scientific exploration, first honing in on a single field, then a single question. Do compatible wolves have similar stress patterns? Does our environment affect the way we remember things? How does a body's biological clock affect its susceptibility to and progression of disease? These are real projects performed by past HGHS Science Research students. What question will you ask?
Finding a mentor, performing research over the summer, writing a research paper and filling out paperwork… it’s certainly not easy. You will need to practice persistence as you encounter obstacles. However, those who are truly curious about their research find that this work is entirely worth it. They leave the program with not only a depth of knowledge, but often, a clearer idea of their future career path (or not, and that’s okay too).
Now, if you don’t know what inspires you yet, don’t worry! Everyone has to start somewhere, and we think it’s great that you are starting here. There is so much to be inspired by and so many questions to ask. For each subject, we have chosen a brief article, a video, and a podcast episode. As you read, watch, and listen, be sure to keep an open mind.
We congratulate you for taking this first step into science. While we selected just a few fields for this exploration, you may choose to investigate beyond the resources that we have provided below. When you become inspired here or elsewhere, explore this page to learn relevant skills and further information specific to your field.
