The Cell Phone Policy: Does It Help Us or Not?

By: Malak Ettahali & Megan Mendoza

This year, Nolan Ryan Junior High has a new principal. Mrs. Marquez is absolutely amazing, but with new leaders, come new changes. Take the cell phone policy for example. It has changed, but does the student body think it as better, or worse? 8th grader Angel Achar comments, “I think it’s not too bad, it allows us to stay on task and get our work done since technically we are going to school to learn.”

The new cell phone policy restricts use of cell phones to lunch and under instruction. Ever since this had happened, the scholars interviewed have had mixed opinions about the new policy. “I think that students should be able to contact their parents in case of an emergency" Student Jayda Love pointed out. Some students believe that they should be allowed to use their cell phones for school work, without receiving any repercussions. An 8th grader comments, "There have been situations where a student was using their phone for school work, but a staff member thought they were using it inappropriately, and didn't give the student a chance to explain."

Based on the students interviewed, they have also been positive opinions about the new change, most of the replies revolving around the idea of staying focused in class. 6th grader Kacem Ettahali says, “I think based on what I heard from last year, this policy is more strict, but we are coming to school to learn, not to play on our phones.” There are many students that agree with the new policy. “Well, I think that the new cell phone policy is fine, it’s not like we were allowed to use our phones last year either. It’s basically the same policy but more strict,” 7th Grader Jewel Parell pointed out.

Since this new policy was put in place, scholars should be paying more attention in class, and should be arriving to class on time.

The Day!

By: Inaya Nomani

The Day, taking place on September 8th, 2018, was a wonderful event to let students help their fellow community by volunteering. Students and faculty were able to do many different tasks such as car washing, picking up trash, repairing structures, and more! The Day was created in spite of the one year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey. As Harvey created much destruction in our area, Alvin ISD wanted this time of year to have happy memories rather than sad. So on Saturday morning, many students and staff wearing their bright shirts went out to volunteer to help out our neighborhood. Based on student comments many students said it was a fun experience and made them feel good about themselves knowing they were helping out their community.

Everyday: A Book Review

By: Westin Gonzalez

Everyday is a young adult book by David Levithan. This book follows A. Yes, it’s name is a single letter. Also, notice how I used it’s. A is neither a boy or a girl. A wakes up in a new body every single day. The body could be either a boy or a girl. A is never in a body twice, and each body A goes into is in the same age range. Love is never an option for A, it’s only way of “loving” is if the person it is inhabiting is already in a relationship. One day, A falls in love with Rhiannon, a girl who is perfect. Is there there a way the A can be one with Rhiannon? Would Rhiannon ever recognize love if it never wore the same face?
