We are now about half way through this semester and it is important to stop and evaluate where you are in this class. At the beginning of this class you identified some goals for yourself and it’s time to look at those and see how you are progressing on those. Please spend some time thinking about your time in this class and where you want to go from here.
How often have you been present in class? How focused on what is happening in class have you consistently been?
Honestly, I haven’t been as present in class as I’d like to be. I feel that when I’m in class I’m pretty active and really interested in what’s being discussed, but I always seem to slip behind because something comes up. I don’t expect any accommodations because ultimately the things I’ve been experiencing this semester have been out of the blue, and I acknowledge I’ll just have to put a bit more effort into absorbing the information in and out of class.
How many hours a week do you typically spend on this class? When thinking about your progress in this class, do you feel it is enough?
I spend a few hours per week on this class, whether it’s spent on assignments or research for the teaching project. I think I am learning a lot but again, I need to put in more effort for a significant amount of progress to be made.
When you look back at the goals you set for yourself at the beginning, how do you feel you are coming on them?
Not the best, I mean I think I am trying pretty hard and I like the system I’ve recently set for myself, but the end goal I want to achieve will take more than that.
We discussed the fact that this class was meant to help you practice a variety of skills useful to any future, not just oceanography. Which do you think you have had most practice with due to class?
I love the discussions - I don’t ever have a chance to have open discussions like the ones we have when we were speaking on renewable resources, climate change, or ocean acidification. I think I’ve learned to be more open to other people’s perspectives.
Looking at your work in this class, what letter grade would you give yourself?
So far, maybe a mid B. But I”ll get it up to an A.
Where do you think you have exhibited your personal strengths in this class?
The discussions and the writing assignments - I really enjoyed the Ocean Acidification worksheet where we had to analyze a number of videos.
Where do you think you are weakest?
Chemistry was the hardest because I never took it in highschool and had a hard time analyzing the graphs. I think I’ll have to put the most effort into that before the semester ends.
Now that you have had a chance to contemplate your focus, time, and performance in this class, is there anything that you are planning to change for the rest of the semester?
I’m restructuring my time since I recently left one of my jobs, and I definitely want to put more time into this class rather than doing what I need to and focusing on other things.
Is there anything else you would like to share regarding how you feel things are going at this point in the class?
I think things are pretty good so far. My only complaint is the different classrooms
