The venue of the Summer School is located just a 7-minute drive from the center of Siena, immersed in the Tuscanian countryside. Siena is one of the most treasured pearls of the region and of Italy as a whole. The beauty of its still intact medieval features, both architectural and folkloric, combined with its artistic tradition cultivated over the centuries, make it an unmissable destination for hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. The artistic and cultural setting is embellished by a food and wine tradition that is the envy of the world.
The heart of Siena's historic center is Piazza del Campo, where twice a year (July 2nd and August 16th) the famous Palio race is held, a centuries-old tradition kept alive by the city's neighbourhoods, known as contrade. With strong religious origins, the Palio race takes its name from the cloth depicting the Madonna, called Palio, which represents the trophy awarded to the winner, and consists of a horse race of three laps around the outer ring of Piazza del Campo. This tradition, so dear to the people of Siena, has become so famous that it is broadcast live throughout the country and attracts spectators from all over the world. We recommend extending your stay in Siena to ensure you don't miss this unique event! Each Palio is a four-day event, therefore on June 29th (the day after the summer school ends) you can see the first trial runs!
