Have you ever heard of barnacles? Barnacles (Balanus glandula) are sticky little crustaceans related to crabs, lobsters, and shrimps. Of the more than 1,400 species of barnacles found in the world’s waterways, the most common ones are called acorn barnacles. As anyone who’s ever maintained a vessel knows, removing barnacles requires some elbow grease (or a pressure washer). Adult barnacles generally do not move and are filter feeders. Many attach themselves to objects or even animals Some species will also attach themselves to boats. Which might not sound like a big deal. Unless you got a lot of barnacles on your boat. Then you could have a problem.
How barnacles slow down ship movement?
Barnacles slow down ships by increasing the drag, or resistance, as the ship moves through water. When barnacles attach to a ship’s hull, they create a rough, uneven surface. This disrupts the smooth flow of water, making it harder for the ship to cut through. As a result, the engines need to work harder and consume more fuel to maintain the same speed. The added weight from barnacles and other marine organisms also contributes to the slow-down. Ships can experience a reduction in speed of up to 10-15% due to barnacle growth.

Science is all about gaining new knowledge from thing that are discovered. The process of this discoveries are what we describe as scientific method. The only problem is, there is no standard in scientific method to describe new knowledge. The scientific method is often presented as a linear sequence of steps, but in practice, scientists frequently revisit and adjust their approaches based on new findings. Below are a few examples of scientific methods that has been used by scientists,
As we can observe, there are variety of ways scientific method being conducted to gain new knowledge that are vital in the development of scientific discoveries. The scientific method is not always linear. Scientists may revisit steps or adjust their approach based on findings
Key Elements in Scientific Investigation
Inferences : Logical statements based on observations. For example, observing different barnacle species on a boat can lead to the inference that multiple species are present
Control Group : A group that does not receive the treatment, allowing for comparison
Constants : Variables that are kept the same to ensure a fair test
Example Investigation :
Testing an eco-friendly additive to prevent barnacle attachment on boats
Independent Variable : Concentration of the addictive
Dependent Variable : Number of barnacles observed
Graphing : Use bar graphs to represent data
Independent Variable : Placed on the x-axis (concentrations of the additive)
Dependent Variable: Placed on the y-axis (number of barnacles)
