Keep the Kea

Protecting the only alpine parrot

Picture this...

A gorgeous, sunny day in the rocky and jagged mountains of New Zealand when a green and brown flash of feathers catches your eye. A naughty, high pitched screech fills the mountain air as you wonder to yourself what makes this bird so unique, so headstrong, to survive among the mountain snow amidst the very thing causing it to struggle- humans. But don’t think too fast- these birds are not your enemy, they need your help- and they need it now.

Meet Bruce! An alpine parrot whose beak was lost in an accident. Bruce demonstrates the sheer intelligence that this bird has to offer by grooming himself with tools- a trait very advanced for animals.

Kea are not only an important part of New Zealand culture, but they represent the larger issues that all endangered animals face. We need to protect the intelligence and spirit we find in the Kea, because once they disappear, they are gone forever. Biodiversity on planet earth is key to our survival- so extend your heart (or wing) to these remarkable animals.

Hey there! Our names are Tristan Thuesen and Sophia Nowlen. We are students in a program called SEA-DISC which stands for Students of the Environment Academy -Doing Integrated Studies Curricula. It is a two-year environmental and social justice academy dedicated to helping create a sustainable and just future. In this program we do projects driven by environmental science, chemistry, and social studies. This website is part of a project that we are doing called "The Endangered Species Project". Our goal was to choose an endangered species that we feel passionate about, collect immense research, and then spread awarness about this animal in a website. We hope that this website gives you an eye into the rough world of the Kea and we also thank you for taking time to visit our site.
