DE ONLANDEN
DE ONLANDEN
From nature consumption to nature connection
About Our Project
Welcome to our project webpage. On this website you can find everything you need to know about our project De Onlanden, like our analysis parts, who we are, and our final advice to our client, Stichting Natuurbelang De Onlanden.
The main objective of our project is seeing how the human-nature relationship can be improved in De Onlanden.
What is the problem?
Current human-nature relationships are characterized by overexploitation, pollution, and a disregard for ecological limits. If people are more strongly connected to nature, this means that they care about the environment, are possibly even concerned about it, and therefore take action to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Fostering a more balanced relationship is therefore crucial. The main issue with De Onlanden is the challenge of fostering a more sustainable relationship between humans and nature in the area. Under the pressures of climate change and conflicting needs, the connection people have with the area is not strong enough to support its long-term ecological and social sustainability.
What is De Onlanden?
De Onlanden is a 2,500-hectare nature reserve in the province of Drenthe, just below the city of Groningen. The nature area was only founded in 2009, and is a natural climate buffer. This means that De Onlanden stores water during heavy periods of rainfall to keep the city of Groningen and neighbouring towns from flooding. The area now does not only serve as water storage, but is also a striving nature area with many different (marsh) birds, small and large grazers, and the otter living there.
Stichting Natuurbelang De Onlanden
Our client, de Stichting Natuurbelang De Onlanden of Leekstermeer, Peizer- and Eelderdiep, simply Stichting Natuurbelang De Onlanden, was founded on January 10, 2000. Years before De Onlanden was actually realized as a contiguous nature reserve. The foundation aims to promote the natural interests of the low-lying peat meadow area, encourage the formation of a contiguous nature reserve, protect, manage and increase the natural values of De Onlanden, and strengthen ecological relationships with other nature reserves.
Our Research Question
"How to foster a sustainable relationship between the people living in and around De Onlanden and De Onlanden itself?"
To answer our research question, we have divided our project into three different analysis parts, called the building blocks, you can find more information about these when you click on the links below.
