(She/Her)
My name is Lucy Bowling, and I am honors student at the University of Alabama studying Chemistry and Mathematics on a Pre-Medical Track. I am originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, but I am proud to call Tuscaloosa my new home.
My junior year of high school, I enrolled in Advanced Placement Chemistry, completely oblivious to the ways in which it would shape me into the person I was meant to become. This class was the first instance in which I had to put in effort in order to get good grades, and the challenge overwhelmed me at first. I did not know how to cope without the instant gratification and ease that the classes I had previously taken had offered me.
With time however, I learned to thrive in the uncertainty, and my work ethic blossomed. I truly enjoyed how intellectually stimulating the difficult material was, and I found myself able to truly take pride in my successes now that I knew I was working quite hard for them.
I began fall in love with the subject of chemistry due to its complex and rewarding nature, and this love for the trials and tribulations that go along with doing difficult things drives my personal values and career path each and every day of my life. I am someone who embraces challenges, seeks out intellectual stimulation, and truly values what my strong work ethic can accomplish.
My interests and passions include science, mathematics, tennis, music, singing, fashion, community outreach, history, medicine, and travel. I gravitate towards these interests and passions because they either stimulate my curiosity or give me an outlet to express myself. I enjoy learning about the complexities of topics I find interesting like science and history, and I enjoy exploring my identity and finding songs or clothes I feel reflect it. My interests and passions are an extension of my truest self and constantly push me to learn and grow.

I plan on leveraging these strengths by choosing a career in medicine, which will suit my both skills in STEM subjects and my ability to work well with others. My organization skills and tendency to persist through challenges will also allow me to succeed and have great impact in this profession.
Growing up, I watched my dad work hours and hours of overtime at his blue-collar job to provide my family with every comfort and opportunity we could possibly hope for. This inspired me to foster a strong work ethic of my own and use it to achieve my goals in school and extracurriculars to position myself for success and fulfillment. I value hard work above all else, which leads me to be very driven regarding my school work and very ambitious regarding my career and life goals.
Also in my formative years, I participated in several volunteering events and even had the opportunity to plan one for a club at my high school. Having the chance to make a measurable impact on my community is something that has always been very meaningful and fulfilling for me, hence my gravitation towards a career path that involves serving society as a healthcare worker.
Time Management- I struggle greatly with procrastination as well as work life balance, so going forward I plan to be stricter with myself regarding my schedule by using tools like to-do lists, calendars, etc. in order to make better use of my time.
Public Speaking- Talking in front of unfamiliar or many people can be very stressful for me, and I often stutter or freeze in these situations. In order to grow in this area, I plan to practice public speaking as much as possible until I am no longer afraid of it.
