Bailey was born and raised in Leytonstone, London, United Kingdom.
Bailey has been married 4 times. He first married Rosemary Bramble from 1960- 1964. He later went on to marry actress Catherine Deneuve from 1965-1972. His third marriage was with Marie Helvin from 1975-1985. In 1986, Bailey married Catherine Dyer and they have been married ever since.
Bailey founded the Design and Art Direction organization which promoted excellence in advertising mainly in London. It was founded in 1962.
In 2016, David Bailey won the INFINITY AWARD of LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT.
