Second Year
My name is Michela Roman, and I am an emerging Canadian artist completing my MFA at the New York Academy of Art. My work engages with memory and identity by giving shape to the body as an expression of the subconscious. I use sculpture to explore the communication between our physical and psychological realities through body language and surface finishing. I was introduced to sculpture in 2019 where I learned clay modelling, mold making, casting and finishing. The majority of my current work is created through these processes. I have searched for new sculptural mediums throughout my career and marble carving is one that I continuously return to. This is not despite the unique challenges the medium brings, but rather because of them. My exploration with marble began at Studio Corsanini with Andrew Akerman and master-carvers, Stephan Shaheen and Fred X Brownstein. I continued to grow and develop my marble skills with Gianluca Giarrizzo at New York Academy of Art last spring and throughout the following summer. I create using a figurative style and draw inspiration from Rodin and Bernini’s emotive control over form to help guide my use of sculptural manipulation to suggest our subconscious. I believe that the exploration of the self exists on a continuum, and alike the material of marble, it is timeless. It excites me to create a work revolving around our endless reflection with a material that itself is endless. Having worked with marble previously, I know how valuable focused and dedicated time to the craft is. This time, gifted by ABC Stone, would allow me the opportunity to rejoin the studio and instructor who introduced me to the craft and combine my journey of marble carving with my current artistic direction. It would be a great privilege to be part of such a one-of-a-kind program.
