The Walter Trumbauer Theatre Competition
What is the “Trumbauer Competition”?
A statewide theatre competition named after a man named Walter Trumbauer for high school students. The competition was created to recognize outstanding theatre achievement in high school. The competition is composed of separate parts. First, students from different areas of the state compete at their locally assigned DISTRICT competition. If a student’s scores high marks from district judges, they are invited to attend the STATE competition. At the state competition, students from all over the state compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place titles in three different divisions, NOVICE, INTERMEDIATE and VARSITY.
What does novice, intermediate, and varsity mean?
Students who have never competed in “TRUMBAUER” register as a “novice” for all events. Students who have been to Trumbauer no more than once are registered in the intermediate division. Veteran students register in the “varsity” division.
Where and when is the DISTRICT competition?
Mountain Brook is assigned to District 6. This district includes all of the Shelby county schools, plus several “over the mountain” schools, private schools. The District 6 competition will be held on Saturday, November 8th at Thompson High School, in Alabaster, AL. (from 8am until 8 p.m.)
Where and when is the STATE competition?
The state competition will be held this year at University of Alabama in Birmingham, in Birmingham, AL from Thursday, December 4th through December 6th. If students receive a Superior rating at District, they will be passed on to compete at the state level. Only students who competed at District and/or are involved in scholarship auditions will be permitted on the state trip.
What events are offered and how many events can a student do?
Students are allowed to enter two different events (NOT including one-acts or ensemble performances). For seniors, there are scholarship audition screenings for colleges and universities around Alabama. Seniors can be eligible to receive a 1,000 scholarship for in-state tuition.

Five $1000 scholarships for Alabama students (either high school seniors or community college students) planning to enter a four-year Alabama college or university, majoring in Drama or Theatre, will be awarded.
Three scholarships will be awarded in performance (acting/musical theatre) including the Patricia Putman Performing Scholarship in honor of the past executive director of ACT. Two scholarships will be awarded to technical theatre/design applicants including the new Mary Nell Sloan Endowed Technical Theatre scholarship, presented in memory of the late Mary Nell Sloan, an active participant in Trumbauer, by the Jordan Groben family.
The awards are announced at the Trumbauer Awards Ceremony in December and distributed when the student registers with an accredited undergraduate college or university within Alabama with the intention of majoring in theatre.
Applications will be evaluated on artistic merit and quality of work. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and a score of 19 and above on the ACT or 1000 and above on the SAT.
