Now that you know what Toxic Positivity is, learn how to avoid it. Even empathetic people want to "help" by relating others' problems to their own... perhaps in an effort to step into their shoes. However, these good intentions can shift attention away from the person who needs help.*

*Stand Together acknowledges that many neurodivergent individuals communicate this way and need to relate their own experience to others in order to empathize, and we recognize that this is not done out of competition or lack of listening. When a personal experience needs to be relayed in an effort to relate, try quickly shifting the focus back to the person in need once the situation is understood.
Learn and practice phrases to say instead of what you might be inclined to say in order to avoid Toxic Positivity. When someone you know is struggling with their mental health, try to use supportive phrases that show you understand what the other person might be going through rather than just dismissing their feelings with hollow platitudes.
