In this activity students will use estimation to develop their knowledge of volume and capacity. Using estimation students have to think about the volume and then put their knowledge into practice when guessing and checking to see if their estimation is accurate.
Students are learning to estimate which containers will hold a set amount a special stones. Can they correctly estimate which container will hold 15 special stones and check to see if their guess was correct.
The teacher selects an amount of special stones, for this example 15
At the front of the room there are a range of containers, all different shapes and sizes
Students are asked to estimate which container will fit the 15 stones the best, more than one student can pick the container and they return to the mat sitting with their container group
One member of each group will bring their container up to fill with the stones
Each group will check to see if their estimation was correct
Critical thinking
Students will need to use their knowledge of volume to estimate and choose an appropriate container for the special stones
Communication
Students are able to talk with others about which containers they think would best suit each stone collection
Collaboration
Students will form groups with other students who choose the same container and will talk about why they chose that container
Creating and innovation
This activity can be made more creative and innovative by choosing interesting and irregular containers or allowing students to each bring in one
