Here at Slaughter, we make digital citizenship instruction a priority throughout the year. Every classroom has a poster about important elements of digital citizenship. Every student watches a video about the district's Acceptable Use Policy at the beginning of each school year. Mrs. Colwell, our librarian/media resource specialist meets with all 3rd, 4th, ad 5th grade classes for an age-appropriate lesson about the digital citizenship elements that are most important and relevant to what these students are likely to encounter. Monthly topics and advice are shared with all students on morning announcements. Our teachers regularly provide guidelines for using technology in the classroom.
All students watch the video below annually to learn about the district's Acceptable Use Policy.
One thing parents and teachers can do to protect students from seeing inappropriate things on the internet is to use an ad blocker. The Chrome Extension, Adblock Plus, blocks pop-ups and commercials on YouTube videos. Users will have to sign into Chrome and install the extension.
As the ISTE Standards for Students states,
Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.
