The 3rd Quarter was another quarter of the school year that went by just like that. It feels like I was writing my 2nd Quarter reflections only last week!
We accomplished many things this quarter with Mrs. B. We created a Public Service Announcement using persuasion techniques and learned about various forms of mythology from the Greeks and the Irish. We also got a lot done in our notebooks.
We created a public service announcement to promote a good cause of our choice. I decided to make mine about preventing the construction of the Maxatawny Warehouse here in our area. We learned about ethos (connection to you/authority), pathos (facts and statistics), and logos (reason/logic), the various persuasion techniques that companies and organizations use to catch your attention. As you may see, I used pathos in my PSA Poster (top left) to show a statistic of the negative ways the warehouse will impact our community. We also created an essay alongside of the poster (bottom left).
I felt a little limited by some of the requirements- I would have done much more with my design if I had the time and freedom. I've done similar work like this before- we wrote lots of persuasion writing in second grade, as practice. I've certainly come far from that!
I'm proud of some of these freewrites because I was able to "just let it flow" and get the words out. I sometimes have trouble with that- getting the words out. I'm the kind of person who likes to make the best thing first, instead of revising. That's a bad habit to get into. The best way to do it is just "flow". I did a pretty good job at that on these freewrites. I exceeded my original standards here- which is good, as I have been trying to raise them for 8th grade (see 1st quarter).
I enjoyed doing the mythology units but I wish we could have had more activities in them. I know a lot of my friends are big fans of Greek Myths and they really liked the personality test. We still had a lot of fun!
I would have done more revision to my Greek story if I could. I'm proud of it because it was very organized. I still wish I could improve it. If it was a 100%, I would want to bring it to a 120%.
I would want people to notice the skill I used on my design and the placement of the text on my poster.
Before this piece, I didn't know very much about the conflict with the Maxatawny Warehouse. Now, I have learned a lot more about it and I've actually continued to keep up with the Coaliation Comission. I want to maybe work with them in the future to create more posters like the one above. I really liked doing this piece, it made me feel a little purposeful and excited about my abilities with graphic design and writing. I want to keep working on things like this in the future, so Mrs. Chester, keep this project going for all the 8th graders next year!
