Writer's Notebook 4
Who am I as a writer?
I think I am a "so-so" writer. Why? Well, when I am focused, I can get the necessary parts of the writing done. But after that, I will try too hard to add too much detail into the writing. In 7th Grade, we read a poem from the perspective of a person on a plane in an emergency. It was amazing- the author added just enough detail (not too little, not too much) and it felt like you were there, in the plane, with them. The assignment was to redesign the poem with a new prompt- however I was too inspired and excited and I added too much detail. It's like cooking- you want a pinch of salt, not a scoop. I kept writing and writing, adding too much salt.
In 8th Grade, I want to change this. I have been practicing, and slowly, I have noticed that I'm getting better at adding just enough detail.
During the middle of the quarter we began working on a RACES TDA for Adm. William McRaven's "Make Your Bed" memoir. Have you changed any ideas you used to have on this subject? I have always been fascinated by the way that our military forces are so clean and tidy, and this was something that helped me understand it more. I am usually not as tidy and clean as a soldier, but I have tried to apply this philosophy to my life currently and I know that if I ever need to get something done, I can use this philosophy to do it. I have definitely got better at writing essays since 6th grade, and it's easier to blend each part of the RACES strategy together. Despite that, I still would like to improve on my use of transitions.
This was fun to do, because preserving memories or information is something very important to me. What did this piece reveal about you as a learner? This piece revealed to me that I have trouble realizing what lessons I learned as a kid. I was surprised I had trouble, since the memories were very vivid. I had to think very deep to figure out what I learned in those moments. To make this piece, I had to go through many different times I remember in elementary school, and it took me a while to pick which ones I wanted. I probably would change the moment if I had more time to work on the piece.
