Time is of the essence

BUT WAIT! Before moving on, here are some simple words that you should probably know first.

"Buổi sáng" = "morning" (sang)
- This is usually used for 0600 to 1100
"Buổi trưa" = "noon" (zhuer)
- This is usually used for 1100 to 1300/1400
"Buổi chiều" = "afternoon" (zhieu)
- This is usually used for 1300/1400 to 1700/1800
"Buổi tối" = "evening" (toi)
- This is usually used for 1700/1800 to 2100/2200
"Buổi Đêm" = "night" (dem)
- This is usually used for 2100/2200 to 0600

"Buổi" simply means "session"

BUT WAIT (again)! Before moving on, here are some OTHER simple words that you should probably know first.

Now that we've got these basics down, let's try using them!

To ask for the time:

"Mấy giờ rồi?" = "what time is it?"
- "Mấy" = how much OR how many
- "Giờ" = hour
- "Rồi"(particle) = already
- "Mấy giờ rồi?" = "how many hours are there already?" = "what time is it?"
- NOTE: to be more polite, the particle "ạ" can be used (ie "mấy giờ rồi ạ?")
"Bây giờ là mấy giờ?" = "what is the time (now)?"
- "Bây giờ" (adverb) = now
- "là" (copula verb) = similar to is
- "Bây giờ là mấy giờ?" = "how many hours are there now?" = "what is the time (now)?"

To tell the time by hours: [hour] + giờ + đúng

To tell the time by half hours: [hour] + giờ + rưỡi

To tell the time by hours and minutes [hour] + giờ + [minute] + phút

To tell the time by the 12-hour clock: [hour] + giờ + [sáng/trưa/chiều/tối/dêm] + [minute] + phút

To tell the time APPROXIMATELY: [hour] + giờ + hơn

Try answering these questions using ALL five of the different ways of telling the time!

What time was our second OCIP meeting? (#ociphanoi had ours at 0715h.)
What time do you wake up for school?
What time does your CCA end?
What time do you actually leave after CCA (hopefully it's not the same answer as the previous question)?
Mấy giờ rồi?

Bảy giờ mươi năm phút OR bảy giờ sáng mươi năm phút OR bảy giờ hơn (0715h).
Năm giờ rưỡi OR năm giờ ba mươi phút OR năm giờ sáng ba mươi phút OR năm giờ hơn (0530h).
Mươi tám giờ rưỡi OR mươi tám giờ ba mươi phút OR sáu giờ tối ba mươi phút OR mươi tám giờ hơn (1830h).
- NOTE: when [sáng/trưa/chiều/tối/dêm] are NOT used, tell the time by the 24-hour clock!
Hai mươi giờ đúng OR tám giờ tối OR hai mươi giớ hơn (2000h).
Mươi hai giờ bốn mươi năm phút OR mươi hai giờ chiều bốn mươi năm phút OR mươi ba giờ hơn (1245h).
