Rattan weaving, otherwise known as wicker weaving, is an ancient craft found in ancient Egypt. In the 20th century rattan products became popular as they were affordable and durable. As such, the rattan trade exploded and it spread to Singapore in no time. Thus, many people started to open shops selling rattan products. Ever since, it has remained as an old trade in Singapore.

What is Rattan weaving?

First, rattan is a beautiful wood product which is grown in the tropical regions of Africa and Asia, with the majority coming from the forests of Indonesia. It's an important part of many communities, providing them with a livelihood. It is a material that is used in wicker weaving (Please note that wicker is not a type of material but a method of weaving a material together in order to hold a solid shape). The skin of rattan strands is peeled off and used for weaving while the core of the rattan plant is used for various purposes such as furniture making.

Rattan weaving is used because not only is it light, durable but flexible. Its light and durable properties are ideal for making furniture whereas its flexibility makes it a suitable material for weaving. In addition, the low cost of rattan strands makes the overall cost of the furniture cheaper as well.
