Greetings everyone!
We are CSUMB students who are part of a participatory action research (PAR) team. Our research was done on anti-colonialism / anti- racism in the Salinas Valley. We chose this topic because as minorities ourselves we are passionate about learning the history and impact of colonialism and racism within our communities and in the Salinas Valley.
This was my 1st choice because I feel our country is at a very pivotal stage. Following the murder of George Floyd, I went out to protest and this changed something inside me. As someone who has lived both a life with privilege but also without certain privilege, I felt it was important for me to learn more about what it means to live in a city with people that look like me, but was built on racism and colonization.

This is my number 1 choice because, while I pride myself in keeping up with the racial issues via the news at a national level, I am not so familiar with these issues in my own community. I feel that it would be enlightening to learn about not only current issues but also the history of racism and colonialism in our community.

I am super interested in this topic as I have a lot of ideas that would contribute to the Salinas Valley. The first step in order to combat racist and colonial legacies is to educate and inform residents as well as students from neighboring schools to understand the significance and importance of Salinas Valley to indigenous and brown people. An example I can think of that pushes for decolonization is to take down racist and derogatory statues and reform the gentrified areas in Salinas.

This was my first choice because I feel like Racism is something we live with today, unfortunately it is something that was created years ago and still goes on today. Racism unfortunately creates violence within each other and in our community there is a lot of violence due to racism especially with the current president we have at the moment. In order to make the community safer, one has to put the effort of willingness to hear and try to understand other viewpoints and come to an agreement.

The reason I chose anti-colonialism/ anti-racism is because I feel like this is a very important topic of today and all of history. It is something that has shaped our society and the way people treat each other. With the climax of today's political issues; I think it's important to talk about a topic has was been ignored for years. Racism still exists and it has been neglected in history books that praise colonizers.

This research topic is my first choice because racism is an ongoing issue in the United States. As a nation we are in a critical stage and now more than ever we need to be educated on this matter. I love my community but I do not know the full history behind it. It will be interesting to see how a predominantly Latinx community like Salinas, upholds colonialism.
