What is STEM Education? STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. In a common workplace, the key skills needed to work properly and efficiently are problem solving, analytical thinking, and the ability to work independently. The education system of STEM provides a hands on experience with helping students with these critical thinking skills. With STEM education, students are gaining knowledge and skills through in-context projects and assignments.
Why is STEM education important? STEM education is important because it helps students to develop a variety of skill sets, including creativity and 21st century knowledge. These skills include media and technology literacy, communication, flexibility, and initiative. Other skills students are able to learn are: critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, and leadership. Even if a student doesn't end up in a career related to STEM, the skills learned in STEM related courses prove to be beneficial.
How can STEM education shape the future? STEM education can shape the future by preparing future generations and students to be innovators. This can happen by providing summer camps and after school programs to students who may be interested in STEM. Instead of relying on traditional learning, these STEM-based opportunities will give students hands-on experience and real world application to help create innovative minds.

Project Based Learning (PBL) is a constructivist instructional approach where students are engaged in meaningful inquiry of personal interest to them and where collaboration and personalized learning are emphasized. STEMSOS is a rigorous, interdisciplinary, standards-focused, and engaging STEM teaching approach that is teacher-facilitated, student-centered and directed through sets of project- and inquiry-based (P&IBL) projects. STEMSOS PBL approach is to maintain the focus on standards-based teaching while enriching and extending the learning of students through PBL projects. The goal is to promote not only collaborative skills and student ownership of learning but also to promote student success in state and national standards.
STEMSOS PBL Showcase is designed to promote and share exemplary student work in PBL projects that can serve as valuable learning and teaching tools for students, parents, teachers, and other educators.
