This was a personal design project to develop my CAD, Arduino, Manufacturing, and Design Skills.
February 17th , 2025 --- March 7th, 2025
Objectives:Â
Design a fully functional mini conveyor belt system
Belt must be made up of solid, 3d printable plastic pieces
Use of stepper motor for precise control of movement
Software and Parts Used:
Onshape CAD software was used to 3d model and Assemble the parts
3d printer used to manufacture all custom parts like the belt, body, and gears
Common Ball bearings, springs, and fasteners were used for an effective design
Results:
Belt slippage was minimized through a spring tensioned belt and the use of rubber O-rings to interface between the belt and axle.
Motor Gearing Can be Adjusted for maximum speed and force requirements due to slotted holes
Belt runs straight and smooth due to guides that hold the belt from underneath
Thoughtful fastener placement resulted in rigid and robust frame
Lessons/Challenges Overcome:
Prototyping with smaller cheaper parts can be more time efficient and economical
Designing for use of cheap and available hardware can minimize development time as well as cost of development
Tolerances are important when manufacturing is imprecise
Adjustability gives room for error and future changes but makes a less elegant and robust final product
