Personal project to develop CAD and Iterative Design Skills.
Objectives:
Design a continuously variable transmission using only mechanical systems
A wide range of "gear ratios" must be achieved. A range larger than 4:1 to 1:4 was desired
Implement an easy to use mechanism to change gear ratios
Software and Parts Used:
Onshape CAD software was used to 3d model and Assemble the parts
3d printer used to manufacture all custom parts from two types of plastic. PLA plastic was used for the body, cones, and lever. 95A TPU was used to manufacture the belt
Common Ball bearings were used to keep rotating friction to a minimum
Results:
Final product has wide variety of "gear ratios"
TPU belt material struggles to grip PLA drive cone piece. Even with a medium like dried glue between parts not much torque can be transmitted
Lever to change gear ratio works but requires too much force to operate. Change to a screw operated adjuster will be made in the future
Proof of concept works but needs redesign to operate more smoothly and transmit more torque
