Hesse is in the central west part of Germany. The capital (Landeshauptstadt) of Hessen is Wiesbaden. The population of Hessen is 6.266 million inhabitants (Einwohner) in 2019. The extension (Fläche) of Hessen is 21.115 km².
Other big cities: Frankfurt am Main, Darmstadt, Offenbach, Hanau, Gießen, Wetzlar, Limburg, Fulda, Kassel and Marburg.
The most important rivers in Hesse are the Fulda and Eder rivers in the north, the Lahn in the central part of Hesse, and the Main and Rhein in the south.

Hessen is bounded by the states of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) to the north, Thüringen (Thuringia) to the east, Bayern (Bavaria) to the southeast, Baden-Württemberg to the south, Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate) to the west, and Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine–Westphalia) to the northwest.
