Hello Sarah! To start this interview off, can you introduce yourself?
Yes! My name is Sarah Roth and I’m your freshman class president! A few things about me are that I love music, either playing or listening. I have also lived in Stuttgart for 3 years, and I have one sister who has left for college.
Awesome! Have you had any previous leadership positions?
This previous year I was the president of the National Junior Honor Society, where I helped raise funds and raise school spirit. I was also a part of the Patch Middle School Student Council and helped set up various dances and events.
How have they prepared you for being the freshman class president?
These positions have prepared me for this job by teaching me the importance of leadership, teamwork, and commitment. I know how to set goals and I work tirelessly to achieve them, and I’m eager to bring that same energy to our student council.
How are the rest of the student body? Are you a good team?
The student body [representatives] are a great team and we have already learned to work together to achieve our goals. Just recently we were asked to decorate our freshman hallways and even though we were tasked with a difficult color (class color is yellow), we found a way to make it work. Unfortunately our decorations have been torn down by fellow students but, together we are working hard to clean up the mess.
Okay, this is a big topic, are you working to allow freshmen to eat lunch off campus? If so, what’s your plan?
We have only had one meeting so far and the freshman eating off campus ban was one of the pressing issues we discussed. We have yet to finalize our plan but we are working toward a trial period where students can have a chance to prove we can handle off campus lunch.
In what ways will you get feedback and input from your classmates?
The entire board is open to hear everyone’s ideas and make sure your voices are heard. If you have something you would like to propose or discuss. Always feel free to shoot me an email or stop me or anyone else on the board in the hallway. We are here to listen and act on your behalf.
Are there any last words you would like to say?
Yes, I would just like to say that no matter how heavy your workload gets, how stressed you are, or how little sleep you have, always remember that you CAN achieve your goals if you keep working for them and never give up.

As the school year goes on, the students at Stuttgart High School are greeted with an abundance of events, including Spirit Week! As Homecoming approached, students dressed up each day to embrace school spirit and creativity.
Monday, students were tasked to unleash their inner athlete for Olympics day! The choice of representing a country or one's favorite sports team was up to each student. “Unfortunately I didn’t have my favorite Olympic sports jersey, but I did wear a football jersey to participate. If I could go back I would have worn an Olympics jersey because I was really into the sports represented.” said senior Em A.
Tuesday, whether it be joy, sadness, anxiety, or any other emotion, students dressed up to match the characters of the beloved Inside Out movies. Senior Elizabeth M said, “I didn’t plan to dress up as a character but was wearing blue so I guess I was sadness.”
Wednesday, friends, significant others, and more joined together to dress up as iconic duos! “I dressed up as Poison Ivy while my girlfriend dressed as Harley Quinn because they are an iconic lesbian duo,” said junior Madeline M.
Thursday, picking between surfboards and motorcycles, students unleashed their inner biker or surfer. “I dressed as a surfer because half my friend group did bikers and the other half did surfers and I love to show my SHS panther pride” said junior Naomi G.
Friday, as the week came to a close, students dressed up according to their class colors for the iconic Homecoming pep rally.
Throughout the week, students were able to embrace themselves as individuals, friends, and classmates. Each day a new challenge of picking a stylish outfit was presented, and the students here at Stuttgart High School nailed it!

The Stuttgart Panthers Varsity team played a great game on Friday the 20th against the Lakenheath Lancers, winning the game with a final score of 21-12. Though the Lancers got the first touchdown, the Panthers followed close behind with a touchdown of our own! In total, the Panthers scored three touchdowns. And while the Lancers pushed, the Panthers stopped them with some great tackles made by players such as #54, #25, and #65! If you see any Varsity football players, make sure to congratulate them on their win! Great job Panthers, and good luck next time!
The Stuttgart Panthers J.V. football team also won their game against the Lakenheath Lancers J.V. team, crushing them with a final score of 31-0. They successfully turned the Lancers fumbles into points for us! Make sure to congratulate them on a fantastic game! Go Panthers!

The Stuttgart High School golf team has gotten off to a great start this year. The team practices Monday-Wednesday every week, putting in long hours of practice, and missing every Thursday for tournaments. Stuttgart won in Vilseck last week, being led by Varsity Golfer Tyler K, who finished first for the men's team. There are a couple more tournaments before the team heads off to Euros at the start of October. Additionally, the team will be heading to K-Town next week for their next tournament.

The Art Club has officially announced its Trunk-or-Treat theme for this year. They plan to do an enchanted forest theme, with some art-themed activities on location. Creative Connections has also been announced. The week-long art camp hosts students from all over DoDEA, and offers specialized classes and experimentation periods in a variety of mediums, including painting, fashion, and filmmaking. There, you can meet and create with people who share your passion for the arts.
The National Art Honors Society (NAHS) also held its first meeting recently, with many plans for getting our artistic students into the public and giving them the recognition they deserve. Additionally, the Ceramics Club now meets every other Tuesday after school. This group specializes in the art of clay, making sculptures, tilework, and wheel work. All of these groups are open for new members and are working towards making our school more creative and beautiful.
This issue’s Featured Artist is Alex T, who has been working with clay and making art for a little over a year. This untitled piece, which took about a month and a half, is of a “bunny standing and staring off to somewhere.” The bunny started just as a head, and then he decided to make the rest of the body. The shape and design came out as he intended. However, when asked about what he would have done differently, he said he “would have done the glaze differently. Maybe add some more depth with lighter and darker colors.” Alex’s goal with the piece was to make something realistic, and the bunny turned out to be a wonderful example of realism within the clay and sculpture medium. Alex is now making a dog out of paper, and plans to stick with the theme of realistic animals.

Inside Out 2
In a happy turn of events, Disney x Pixars’ newest release was an absolutely phenomenal sequel. Building on the previous installment, we get to once again follow Riley through a personal and emotional journey. Now going into high school, Riley is faced with either being popular and changing herself for others or staying true to herself and her friends. At the same time, new fun emotions come along for the ride like Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and then whatever “Ennui” is. With a funny and sometimes deep script, we all can once again see parts of ourselves through the Inside Out world. Go Fog Horns!
Deadpool and Wolverine
The movie that was thought to be impossible to make is actually here, what? And not just that, but it is the highest grossing R-rated film ever!? With Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman returning to reprise their respective roles as Deadpool and Wolverine, this movie was looking good heading towards release. And it is good. Deadpool 3 was the funniest and most action packed film in the trilogy. The movie works on multiple levels. The the biggest selling point is the dynamic between Deadpool and Wolverine, with the latter having nothing to say and the former doing nothing but talk. While the story is less emotionally impactful than the last two, Deadpool goes on a journey of self discovery and works on being more of a force for good than a morally very, very dark gray loose cannon. However, the movie definitely makes up for its somewhat lackluster story by doing one thing: being a whole lot of fun!
Despicable Me 4
Yet another Despicable Me movie graced the silver screen this summer, and of course it made bank in the box office. While this fourth movie didn’t do anything new or great, it was enjoyable enough for a kid’s animated comedy. It was fun and super fast paced, with its strongest selling point being the visual gags, which thankfully landed a good amount of the time. The story focused on Steve Carrel’s Gru's father-son dynamic with his child. Overall, the story is more disjointed than cohesive. The film is really just happy and pointless fun, which is honestly all it has to be. The highlight was definitely a wheelchair with monster truck wheels.
Twisters
Twisters is a monster movie along the lines of Jaws, except that it is also a natural disaster film. It is an interesting idea and has likable characters, who really carry the film. The story follows groups of storm chasers, who work to weaken the intensity of twisters and obtain funding for their research. The biggest selling point is definitely the twisters themselves, with great special effects and decently realistic depictions of the Natural Terrors. The twisters allow for a unique and terrifying monster of nature that destroys everything in its path and outlines just how devastating reality can be. Ultimately, it is a fun watch and is definitely enjoyable with its unique premise.

As the summer heat fades away and the leaves begin to turn familiar shades of orange and red, the time to curl up with a good book is quickly approaching. Autumn is the season of cool air and cozy sweaters, and a perfect time to discover your next favorite book.
One of the most iconic novels of all time, "The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger follows the story of a troubled teenager named Holden Caulfield. After being expelled from an all-boys prep school, he navigates the streets of New York City, reflecting on the phoniness of adult society. With its blunt humor and erratic storytelling, "The Catcher in the Rye" is a timeless classic that resonates with multiple generations. If you're in the mood for a thought-provoking and relatable novel, this is a must-read.
“Wuthering Heights" by Emily Brontë is a gothic novel, taking place in the wild Yorkshire moors. This novel follows a complex relationship between two characters, a passionate man named Heathcliff and an aristocratic woman named Catherine. Filled with vivid portrayals of emotion and intricate dynamics between the main characters, it keeps readers hooked. For those seeking a story of love and revenge, "Wuthering Heights" is something to add to your reading list.
"The Secret History" by Donna Tartt is a thriller that will keep you engaged from start to finish. The novel follows a group of classical students at a small liberal arts college in New England, who find themselves involved in a dangerous and deadly mystery. Tartt's attention to detail and hair-raising exposition makes "The Secret History" a good pick for fans of fiction and psychological thrillers.
"Anne of Green Gables" by L.M. Montgomery is a beloved classic that has captured the hearts of readers for generations. It’s set in the 1880s, following the adventures of an orphan girl named Anne while she navigates her way through life in a small Canadian town. With its charming characters and heartwarming story, "Anne of Green Gables" is sure to leave you feeling nostalgic and cozy.

Minor spoilers ahead.
“I Saw the TV Glow”, one of the newest films from production company A24 (known for recent horror classics such as Midsommar and Hereditary), came to streaming on Friday, September 20th. Despite critical praise, the viewing experience of the unsettling horror film falls flat.
The film follows Owen, who, after meeting a mysterious older girl named Maddie, becomes obsessed with a fictional late night TV show entitled “The Pink Opaque”. The film handles how we perceive both our past and ourselves through ideas of nostalgia, escapism, and self-exploration. Conceptually unique and visually stunning, where the movie falls flat is its plot (or lack thereof).
The film seems to lack a traditional movie structure. While in a typical movie an inciting incident would set the plot going, “I Saw The TV Glow” seems to fake out the viewer with various false starts. Throughout the hour and forty minute film, I kept trying to figure out what Owen’s journey would be: will he seek out Maddie after her mysterious disappearance? Reflect and untangle his muddled childhood? But as the movie ends, I was only left with one thought: “Is that it?” The individual elements work well, but there isn’t any structure for the viewer to latch onto, leaving the experience unfulfilling.
The movie is dreamlike and meandering, never going anywhere until it gets cut off. While its portrayal of the experience of being transgender (as stated by its director, Jane Schoenbrun) is reflective and powerful, it’s ineffective as a movie for people to actually watch, more similar to a film one would find in an art museum than a traditional movie theater. Sadly, despite the movie’s phenomenal reputation, I won’t be re-watching anytime soon.

This last Tuesday, September 17th, several pagers used by the militant group Hezbollah exploded. Less than 24 hours later, a second wave of explosions came from other devices used by the group. In total these two attacks killed 34 people, and left at least 600 wounded. These attacks are widely believed to be attacks from the neighboring country of Israel, which hasn’t yet commented on the attacks directly.
Hezbollah is a political Shia Muslim group, with a large military presence in Lebanon. Hezbollah staged attacks against Israeli forces during their retreat out of Lebanon in 2000, taking credit for driving Israel out of the country. In 2006, a cross-border raid by Hezbollah sparked a war, ending with Israel invading southern Lebanon in an attempt to eliminate the organization. Since its war with Israel, Hezbollah has increased its missile arsenal and fighters, causing it to be considered a terrorist organization by Western states such as the U.S.
Since Hamas’ incursion into Israel in October last year, tensions between Israel and its neighbors have been rising, especially with Lebanon. Since then, conflict has been steadily increasing on the Israel-Lebanese border. The explosions are considered to be a further escalation of conflict, with the Israeli Defense Minister stating: “We are at the start of a new phase in the war” in a speech to troops.
The pagers and other devices only arrived in Lebanon around six months before the attack. They had the logo of Gold Apollo, a Taiwanese company, and reportedly came from Hungary. Gold Apollo’s founder and president Hsu Ching-kuang claims that “The product was not ours. It was only that it had our brand on it”. The pagers had explosives devices built into them before being shipped to Hezbollah that were activated remotely via radio signal.
There is still a lot left to be determined regarding where the devices really came from and who exactly is responsible, but the attacks have increased tensions and weakened Hezbollah. It’s not unlikely that this event will spark an offensive from either Israel or Hezbollah into the other's territory, but for now we can only wait and see.
