WRESTLING
February was a busy time for many people with Wrestling, Basketball, Cheer, Marksmanship and Swim all competing in championships. After a two day tournament on the 9th and 10th of February, the Stuttgart wrestling team took second. They fought hard for the championship with many wrestlers placing in the top six. Alex Samler, a senior and captain on the team, said the team worked hard all season giving their all and never gave up even when the odds were stacked against them. Samler himself received 5th place after losing a few crucial rounds the first day. Jack Gruver, another senior on the team placed first in his weight class. Aidan Morgan, Zach Call and Conner Hutchinson also wrestled in the championship round earning second overall. Before Euros, the wrestling team had spent the season in fierce competition with Ramstein.
RIFLE
Rifle competitors on the other hand spent a week at Camp Perry in Ohio where they took 5th at the Army Service Championships. Katie Gilooly, a member of the team, said that it was tough competition as they competed against teams from across the United States and Europe. Stuttgart may have been at a slight disadvantage as many other teams didn't have to travel for 9 hours across the globe. Despite this the team did well individually with Aurora Mayo placing seventh overall across the entire competition. Air Rifle Championships are scored based on 3 categories– kneeling, prone and standing with 20 shots in each. With teams in both Precision Class and Sporter Class the SHS Air Rifle Team placed high overall in the competition with over 40 other precision teams.
BASKETBALL & CHEER
The next weekend in Wiesbaden there was a 3 day tournament where basketball continued to defend their championship title with both the girls and boys teams taking first place. The boys took the championship 47-36 against Ramstein, arguably Stuttgart’s biggest rival. The girls also played Ramstein and took the crown 33-26. Stuttgart has dominated all winter with the boys going undefeated throughout the season. Also occurring in Wiesbaden during this time was the cheer team’s Europeans who took second in the stunt competition, with Chadwick Berry and Emily Blalock named to the all-tournament team.
SWIM
The Stuttgart Piranhas also competed in the Netherlands February 7th in a short distance championship alongside 400 other swimmers from across Europe and the United Kingdom. Overall all our teams had a fantastic season and we can't wait to see what the spring sports will do next!

In 1944, the first Golden Globes took place to celebrate the creative talent in the film and television industry, from the perspective of international journalists. This year it took place on January 8th and was the 81st year of the ceremony. It continued to celebrate these industries as 9.4 million people watched the show this year.
The Golden Globes had many significant winners, from Barbie and Oppenheimer to Succession and The Bear. Oppenheimer led with five total wins including best picture (drama), best director, best actor, best supporting actor and best original score. Yet Barbie was only awarded two Golden Globes, best song (What Was I Made For by Billie Eillish) and the new cinematic and box office achievement award (grossing $1.4 billion). While Barbie didn’t win as many awards as many people expected it to, it was still recognized as being impactful and important. When accepting the award, Margot Robbie thanked “the brave individuals” at Mattel and Warner Bros for allowing this movie to be produced, which was a risky decision, but led to a meaningful film that many people needed to see. Succession ties the record for the most wins in the best drama category with and won 4 awards for its final season, including best drama series, best actor for Kieran Culkin, best actress for Sarah Snook and best supporting actor Matthew Macfadyen. The Bear won best comedy series, with its main two actors also winning their own awards for the show. Jeremy Allen White won his second consecutive Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy series and Ayo Edebiri won her first Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy series. Another significant moment in the award show was Lily Gladstone becoming the first indigenous person to win a Golden Globe for best actress, which she won with her role as Mollie in Killers of the Flower Moon.
Stand-up comedian and actor Jo Koy hosted the show for the first time. He was reportedly only asked to host two weeks prior, which he repeated in his speech. Koy used his common technique of engaging with the audience through cracking jokes about them. However, his jokes often fell flat, from a joke about Taylor Swift attending football games to making Meryl Streep do the “Wakanda Forever” salute in jest. He praised Oppenheimer, then moved on to a series of jokes about how Barbie was a movie about a sexually attractive doll. When the jokes didn’t land, Koy proceeded to defend himself by saying that he didn’t write some of the jokes exclaiming, “I got the gig ten days ago! You want a perfect monologue?” His remark that he didn’t write the jokes ignores the fact that he still chose to say everything that he did.
Many friendships and relationships were present at the Golden Globes. Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet’s relationship was highlighted at the event, wearing matching all black looks. The two were seen whispering to each other in their seats, which fans speculated over, wondering what they were saying. On that note, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift were also seen gossiping with each other in their seats. The two were often photographed with each other, reminding people what a great pair they are. Moments like these at the event reminded many viewers that celebrities are still people.

As the annual awards season comes to an end, cinephiles and casual viewers alike can look forward to the Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars. Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Oscars celebrate excellence in filmmaking. There are 24 categories, all of which consist of five nominees (except for Best Picture, which has ten). Awards cover almost every aspect of filmmaking, such as best director, best original screenplay, or best actor in a leading role. The nominees and winners are decided on by a popular vote of members of the Academy, which is made up of people in the industry, such as actors, directors, producers, etc.
MARGOT ROBBIE AND GRETA GERWIG “SNUB”
Before discussing some of the nominations, it’s valuable to talk about who or what wasn’t nominated for certain awards this year; namely, in one of the first Oscar-related scandals of the year, the absence of nominations for Barbie director Greta Gerwig and actress Margot Robbie in their respective categories. Upon the release of the nominations for this year, there was an outcry from some on this “snub,” with some claiming that the Academy clearly missed the message of feminism and female empowerment in Barbie. And, to be fair, four out of the five directors who were nominated for Best Director this year are men. Within an industry where there are disproportionately fewer women behind the film camera, those critical of the nominations have pointed out that even when present, women are not necessarily being honored for their hard work. However, this seems to be more of an issue with the Best Director rather than with the Best Actress category; it must be noted that Margot Robbie’s spot was not taken by a man. Five very highly praised actresses are up for the award, including Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, who is the first Native American to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.
BEST PICTURE
As stated before, there are ten nominees for Best Picture, and some of the front runners this year include Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, and Poor Things. Oppenheimer is predicted to win by multiple sources, including Variety and Entertainment Weekly’s Oscar Expert Joey Nolfi. In case you weren’t in on the Barbenheimer hype this past summer, Oppenheimer follows J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, as he becomes the director of the Manhattan Project, is seen as a possible Communist and threat to the United States, and must deal with the morality of his work. In my personal opinion, Oppenheimer was a bit dull, but it’s been praised for both technical and artistic aspects.
BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Online, many are saying that the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role is really between Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer and Paul Giamatti as Paul Hunham in The Holdovers. The Holdovers is a tale of regret and forgiveness, set at Christmastime, that centers on a classics professor at a private school portrayed by Paul Giamatti, a lonely student played by Dominic Sessa, and a grieving mother portrayed by Da'Vine Joy Randolph. Randolph was also nominated for her role in the category of Best Supporting Actress. If you were to ask me, Paul Giamatti gave a more moving performance, but Cillian Murphy has been praised for his dedication to the role.
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Many of the highest praised movies of the year are adapted screenplays. There are two screenplay categories at the Oscars: original and adapted. The four movies with the most nominations –Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Barbie– are all categorized as adapted screenplays; except for Barbie, they’re all based on books. However, Killers of the Flower Moon was not nominated for the Best Adapted Screenplay category. Fun fact, dozens of past Best Picture winners are actually based on books. While there are many other aspects of the Academy Awards that could be discussed, these are just some of the hot topics of discussion this year. Hopefully you can better understand discussions as we approach awards night, or even start conversations with your movie loving friends.

Leaving audiences speechless, Past Lives premiered at the Sundance Festival in January 2023 and was released theatrically in June of the same year. Celine Song’s directorial debut and stars Greta Lee as Nora Moon, Teo Yoo as Hae Sung, and John Magaro and Arthur Zaturansky. The A24 film explores the idea of fate–the happenstance and magic in happening upon someone for a second time and getting a chance at an opportunity you’ve always wanted to take. One line from the movie introduces it meaningfully, “There’s a word in Korean: 인연 [in-yeon]. It means ‘providence’ or ‘fate.’ But it’s specifically about relationships between people. I think it comes from Buddhism and Reincarnation. It’s an in-yeon if two strangers even walk past each other on the street and their clothes accidently brush, because it means there must have been something between them in their past lives. If two people get married, they say it’s because there have been eight thousand layers of in-yeon over eight thousand lifetimes.”
Past Lives follows Nora in her journey throughout life, learning about love and her former connections with people as they come up in her adulthood. The film walks us through Nora’s childhood, allowing the viewers to immerse themselves in the connection that she has with her childhood crush, Hae Sung. Then it takes us through her family’s immigration to Canada and her eventual move to New York City, losing the connection that she had with him. However, when he reaches out to her online, they are able to reconnect over years. They face internal conflict over what their relationship with each other really is and Nora’s marriage to Arthur Zaturansky makes it difficult to comb through.
The performances of the actors pull the movie together. Lee plays Nora as confident, but still questioning her life choices and unassured at times. While she is happy with her successful life as a writer in New York, her mind still wanders to the other possibilities that she had. Yoo portrays Hae Sung in a reserved and heartbreaking way. He exhibits a longing for Nora that can be seen in his quiet demeanor and how he speaks with Nora. He shows his true emotions in the poignant line, “What if this is a past life as well, and we are already something else to each other in our next life? Who do you think we are then?” Nora’s husband, Arthur, is played by Magaro as more aloof than the other characters, while having his meaningful moments. While the character can be seen as less serious at times, he also depicts his softer side and love for Nora. These three performances come together to show us that there is no true good or bad among the characters, but the situation they are in is more complicated because of that.
One of the most powerful aspects of the movie is that it allows you to sit in your emotions and feelings that it causes. The pauses between sentences in conversations, moments of silence, and emotional music that fills each scene completes the movie and lets you fully realize every little moment and detail in the scenes. Each shot of the movie is deliberate to cause an audience reaction. Celine Song explained that she wanted to “capture that feeling of time” and its “fleetingness” through the cinematography. From the amount of space between the actors to the scenery that surrounds them, the movie includes deep meaning in every decision that intrigues the audience and fully immerses you in the lives of the characters.
Past Lives is a movie that everyone can relate to through its theme of ‘fleetingness of time’, as Song described it. It doesn’t take a film analyst or a cinematographer to understand the profoundness in the meaning within the movie. While no one person will have the exact experience depicted in the film, it can relate to any relationship that seems to struggle with missed opportunities across time. Past Lives is such a well praised and effective movie because of how well it plays with the audience’s emotions. Anyone can find a connection in it and fully immerse themself in the experience through this narrative.

College football is crazy. There’s really no other word that can describe it as perfectly as crazy does. Whether it be rivalry week, unexpected success, or coaching scandals, it’s safe to say there is never a dull moment.
Anyone who has been involved in or watched college football at all this season knows that its insane level of craziness started back in December of 2022 when none other than NFL legend Deion Sanders was hired to be the new Head Coach of Colorado’s disastrous collegiate franchise. Sanders came into his new role with one goal in mind– to restore the team to the glory of its 10-4 2016 season even if it meant cleaning house. He made this abundantly clear early on, even going so far as to say, “There’s gonna be change...go ahead and jump in that portal,” in a released video of his early team meetings. Following this he led the team to a 3-0 start which had every collegiate fan bandwagoning for the Buffalos. The fairytale was over too soon for all Coloradans, however, when an early season collapse saw them finishing 4-8, crowning them with their 16th losing season in just 19 years.
Colorado wasn’t the only team that had interest circulating their Head Coach; Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh was suspended towards the end of the season in conjunction with a sign-stealing scandal. The scandal came to light when a Michigan staffer was caught buying tickets to games of Michigan rivals and sending people to watch those games to record the signals used. After a dominant win over Purdue, the NCAA took preemptive action and suspended Harbaugh for the remainder of the regular season. His absence didn’t stop the seemingly unstoppable power that is the Wolverines, however, as they finished the year undefeated, including a 6-point win over the rival Ohio State Buckeyes.
There were multiple instances this season that showed the NCAA doesn’t play around when it comes to rules. JMU shocked the collegiate world after they finished 11-1 in their second year after moving up from the FCS league to the FBS league. A record like this would normally be accompanied by droves of happy fans who get to see their favorite team play in a bowl game or have a playoff berth, but sadly for the Dukes, this was not the case. Per the NCAA rulebook, a team must complete two years as an FBS team before they are allowed to compete in a bowl game. Despite outrage all across social media from angry students, players, (and fans of opposing teams who would love to face JMU) the NCAA denied multiple appeals by the team to overturn this rule. The purple and gold ended up coming out on top though when they finally got approved for bowl eligibility due to the lack of other eligible teams.
Being an undefeated team definitely comes with bragging rights and that is because of how hard it is to accomplish. Apart from Michigan, there has been only one other undefeated team this year and that is the University of Washington. After a close win over the Texas Longhorns in the 2022 Alamo Bowl game, there were a lot of expectations for the Huskies coming into 2023, and it's safe to say they did not disappoint. Trailblazing their way to a 12-0 season, Washington topped it all off with a Pac-12 Championship over their rival Oregon who they beat by 3.
To add to all of the craziness, this year’s Pac-12 Championship was played by 2 teams who are leaving the division after the conclusion of the 2023 season. Last summer, USC and UCLA announced that both schools were leaving the Pac-12 for the Big 10. This opened the floodgates for the 2023 season, as an additional 6 teams left the division in hopes of finding greener pastures. With a total of 8 teams leaving, the Pac-12 was left in shambles with the only remaining teams being Stanford, Cal, Oregon State, and Washington State. Later down the line, it was announced that the division would be disbanded and the four remaining teams would become independents. The division had a legendary send-off, though, as the championship game pulled in historic TV ratings making it the most watched game in the pac-12’s 108-game history.
The world of college football is on fire and it seems as if every week another gallon of gasoline gets poured on top. The 2023 collegiate football season definitely has had its ups and downs. That being said, it had what was most important: entertainment.

SWEDEN
Sweden is well known for being the home of Ikea, but the country is so much more than a furniture store. Sweden is one of the best places to visit in the winter as it’s almost always covered in a thick blanket of snow creating a winter wonderland. One of Sweden's most known attractions is the Aurora Borealis or the northern lights which are best seen from September to March. The northern lights are best seen in the northern parts of Sweden in cities such as Kiruna or the tiny village of Porjus where you can stay in a cabin or a traditional tent called a lavvu. Another place to see the northern lights is the town of Jukkasjärvi which also happens to be home to the famous Icehotel, carved out of ice every December.
If relaxing is not your jam you can take a trip to the Are ski resort with 89 runs and some of the best off-piste skiing in the world. A bonus of being located in Scandinavia Are is often open much later than other European ski resorts making it the perfect place to get in one last trip before the seasons end. All in all Sweden is one of the best places to visit if you enjoy winter and the snow. With many different activities everyone can find something they enjoy.
VENICE
When thinking of winter destinations, Venice may not be one that comes to mind. However, Venice is one of the best places to visit this winter as they offer much during the winter that you don’t get to see during its peak tourist seasons.
During the month of December, Venice is home to one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in all of Europe. The Campo San Stefano market is one of its most popular and runs until December 24th and sells everything from jewelry to carnevale masks. One of the main advantages of visiting Venice in the winter, though, is the ability to explore the city without hordes of tourists. This leaves sights that are usually very busy, calm and easy to explore.
Another reason to visit Venice in the winter is the festival of Carnevale which takes place each year in February and has been a tradition since 1162. It is famous around the world for its elaborate costumes and stunning masks. Throughout its 10 day run, mini plays are put on throughout the city, culminating in a large parade on the last day.
Despite its reputation as a summer destination, Venice should be added to your winter trip list for all of its unique winter offerings.
MALTA
Known for its summer vibrancy, Malta undergoes a tranquil transformation in winter, offering a serene escape from the usual hustle. Valletta, the historic capital, unveils its medieval allure with cobblestone streets and cultural landmarks like the Grand Master's Palace, creating a peaceful backdrop for winter strolls. The island of Gozo, just a ferry ride away, offers a slower pace amid lush countryside and rugged coastlines. Winter temperatures remain mild, making it ideal for outdoor activities and for those who don’t like the cold of winter with temperatures staying in the 60’s most days, even in December.
Festive events punctuate the winter calendar, including enchanting Christmas markets and traditional pageants, infusing the island with warmth and celebration.
Malta's winter charm extends beyond its renowned summer appeal, inviting visitors to embrace the quieter ambiance, cultural traditions, and welcoming spirit for an enchanting winter getaway in the heart of the Mediterranean.

DESTINATIONS ABROAD
ROME
Rome is a well known travel destination popular during this time of the year since it has cool but sunny weather combined with wonderful sites such as the Colosseum and the Sistine Chapel. These two traits are complemented by the multitude of delicious Italian dishes found in restaurants across the ancient city, usually having wonderful views of the city from their outdoors or window seatings. All in all these things make Rome a delightful destination for this spring break.
LONDON
London is a popular vacation spot due to its lively streets and lots of interesting sites, such as the Big Ben and the Tower of London. These sites could take up most of your time in the city, however you could also venture down to London theaters where they have played many Broadway musicals, like Hamilton and Wicked. The city itself is split by the river Thames, upon which you can embark on a tour of the city, seeing all of the best sites from a river view. The weather there can be quite troublesome as it rains often or has heavy cloud cover, so if you do decide to travel here I would recommend a good coat and umbrella!

The Israeli-Palestine conflict is an old conflict, beginning over a century with the movement of a large Jewish population into Palestinian territory decreed by the British in the Balfour Declaration on the 2nd of November 1917. This declaration stated that the British Government would make Palestine the national home for Jewish people, leading to a mass immigration between 1923 to 1948 into an area that initially was made up of over 90% Palestinian Arab Natives.
World War 2 expedited this process as more and more Jewish people fled from Eastern and Central Europe from fear of Nazi persecution. This led to rising tension between newcomers and Natives boiling up in the Arab revolt, which lasted from 1936-1939. Measures taken during this revolt included the boycott of Jewish stores, a general strike by Palestinians and a refusal to pay taxes. These actions caused British outlash and quick escalation; village bombings, strict curfews, and punitive home demolitions were often used by the British to suppress resistance. A Jewish paramilitary force was set up, becoming the primary military for the British at the time. The 3 years of revolt led to more than 5,000 Palestinian deaths and over 300 Jewish deaths. By 1947 the United Nations determined that Palestine should be split into a Palestinian and Jewish plan, providing the 33% of Jewish population 55% of the land and the 67% of Palestinian population 45%; this resolution was thus denied by the Palestinians.
From 1947-1948 a Zionist group performed Nakba, “a catastrophe” in Arabic, destroying over 500 villages and killing 15,000 Palestinians. The Zionist movement captured 78% of historic Palestine and left the Gaza strip and West Bank to the Palestinians, and on May 15th, 1948 Israel announced its establishment.
This was called the first Arab-Israeli War and it ended the following year after an armistice in January 1949. In 1950 Egypt took control of the Gaza Strip and in 1964 the Palestine Liberation Operation (PLO) was formed. On June 5th, 1967 Israel occupied the rest of historical Palestine in the 6 Days War and settlement construction began in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.
In December of 1987 the First Intifada, which means uprising against oppression in Arabic, started as Palestinian protesters across the West Bank rioted, leading to the establishment of the Hamas movement and a hard pushback by the Israeli government. The First Intifada ended in 1993 when the Oslo accords were signed, creating the Palestinian Authority (PA) as an interim government allowing limited self rule in certain parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The PLO, then accepted as a representative of Palestine, agreed to a two state solution giving Israel 60% of historical Palestine and having joint control over 22% of historical Palestine. The Second Intifada began on the 28th of September 2000 when Ariel Shanon, an Israeli politician soon to be elected as the minister of Israel in 2001, visited the Al-Aqsa mosque with a security detachment positioned in the old city of Jerusalem which clashed against Palestinian protesters. This sparked an armed uprising which ended in Israel reoccupying the areas governed by the PA and beginning construction of walled borders between Israel and Palestine.Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip were taken apart and Palestine had its first general election resulting in a Fatahs-Hamas civil war after Hamas took the majority. Hamas expelled Fatahs from the Gaza Strip and Fatahs took control of parts of the West Bank; Israel determined Hamas as a terrorist group and set up a blockade on the Gaza Strip. Israel has led 4 assaults on the Gaza Strip in 2008, 2012, 2014, and 2021, called Operation Protective Edge by Israeli forces. On October 7th this year Hamas launched an assault on southern Israel taking around 250 hostages into the Gaza Strip. In retaliation Israel has been launching an air and ground assault on the Gaza Strip. However, a ceasefire occurred on November 24th to the 1st of December and Hamas released 110 hostages during this time in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners in Israel. The fighting resumed on the 1st of December as Israel resumed its assault on the Gaza Strip.

Perhaps you’ve heard discussion surrounding the Republican primary debates that have been occurring this year. These debates have been in preparation for the next stage of the presidential election process, the U.S. primaries. The U.S. primary elections are conducted to select candidates for parties for the general election and are typically held from January to June of the year of the presidential election. The dates of primary elections vary on a state-by-state basis.
Primaries involve secret ballots being cast which get considered by states. They can be open, closed, or semi-open, which impacts who can cast a ballot. In an open primary, anyone, regardless of affiliation, may vote in one of the primary elections in their state. In a closed primary, voters may only vote in the primary of their registered political party. The third kind of primaries are semi-closed, with independent voters being able to choose an election to vote in, but registered voters only being able to vote in their party’s primary.
These differ from caucuses, which also exist to select presidential nominees, but are meetings conducted by political parties.
Anyone 18 or older (or additionally, in select states, those who will be 17 during the primaries but 18 during the general election) may vote in their state’s primary. According to Kendall Douglass for the Federal Voting Assistance Program, FVAP “assist[s] absentee voters in several ways.” They help with “voting registration, ... provid[ing] absentee ballots, election office information, state-specific voting requirements, and much more.” The FVAP office can be found on Panzer in the Transition Office, Bldg. 2913/Rm. 119.
For the upcoming elections, the Democratic candidates include current president Joe Biden, author Marianne Williamson, and congressman Dean Phillips. The current list of Republican candidates consists of former president Donald Trump, Florida governor Ron Desantis, former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, former biotechnology investor Vivek Ramaswamy, former New Jersey governor and federal prosecutor Chris Christie, former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson, and North Dakota governor Doug Burgum. Some candidates have also dropped running in the race, such as former vice president Mike Pence in October or Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is now running independently.
While Joe Biden and Donald Trump lead polls of their respective parties, neither have participated in any primary debates. The Democratic National Committee not scheduling any primary debates has drawn some controversy. Donald Trump has also faced criticism for not participating in any debates, yet retorts by saying that he is already leading in polls of Republican voters and therefore does not need to attend.
