A child's math achievement is a strong predictor of future school + career success!
MATHia involves a lot of reading! Research has long linked strong reading skills with improved math achievement—which may seem obvious when it comes to typical math tasks like understanding directions on a test, or parsing word problems, but literacy skills also support and deepen math understanding in unique and powerful ways.
Math is about relationships, patterns, and language. Using continuous data to improve teaching & learning math, the timeline for concept mastery varies from student to student. Many students need multiple exposures over time to new math concepts and skills, before showing mastery.
Teaching is an 'art' (subjective) and a 'science' (objective), so my teacher-created assignments is the 'art,' while MATHia is the 'science' that serves as both an assessment & reteaching tool! MATHia is used for personalized learning by allowing students to learn at their own pace through competency-based progression. Each student gets the support (i.e. hints) to help master the skills.
Since students are being assessed on what they were previously taught, MATHia is effective for “retrieval practice” or “test-enhanced learning,” which is the strategy of using recall for long-term retention. Math is not a spectator sport, so students learn math by applying math in their everyday lives. By relying on multiple sensory pathways (multimodal), this encodes learning material more effectively in the minds of students — leading to more durable memories.
Data is used to identify skill gaps, monitor student engagement, reinforce content knowledge, error analysis, understand student thinking, and collaborate with parents. This is why teachers need to consistently use technology to gather multiple data points about their students’ real-time progress and performance, in order, to adapt lessons to enhance students' learning journey!
In today's economy, math (logical thinking/ability to identify patterns), technology, and innovation are more crucial than ever!

MATHia allows for both criterion-referenced grading (based on standards) as well as self-referenced grading (through the progress tracker).
Criterion-referenced grading is also referred to as absolute standards grading. Grades are assigned by comparing a student’s performance to a defined set of standards to be achieved, objectives to be learned, or knowledge to be acquired. Self-referenced grading framework (also called growth-based grading), grades are assigned by comparing students’ performance with their own past performance. That way, we reap both benefits: the motivational value of self-referencing and the interpretability of criterion-referenced grades.
