The Governor’s School of North Carolina is the oldest statewide summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students in the nation. The program began in 1963 as the brainchild of several North Carolina educators and leaders with the goal of providing the gifted students of the state with an experience that would broaden their educational horizons by presenting them with cutting-edge ideas and theories. The Governor's School is a 4-week residential program and students stay on campus at one of the local Universities.
The program is administered by the State Board of Education and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). Since 2021, NCDPI’s Office of Advanced Learning & Gifted Education oversees the program, before that year it was administered by the Office of Exceptional Children.
Each summer, selected students are invited to Governor’s School to help build a learning community during a four-week session. Students are encouraged to explore and ask questions, with the purpose of learning for its own sake and discovering new possibilities that complement their high school instruction, without the regular pressures of tests, scores, and grade point averages. The Governor’s School emphasizes collaborative efforts in all disciplines.
Students go through a local and state nomination process. Students are selected locally at the district level or at the school level, if at a charter or non-public school. Each district/school has its own process to determine nominees for NCDPI at the state level. If you would like to be considered for the LHS Governor's School nomination, please with your School Counselor.
Sophomores & Juniors: Summer Ventures applications are being accepted now! Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics is a no-cost, state-funded program for academically talented North Carolina students who aspire to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. You will have the opportunity to engage in research with faculty and get hands-on experience at a university.
Each summer, 80 of the world's most accomplished high school juniors gather at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for the Research Science Institute (RSI). RSI is the first cost-free to the student, summer science & engineering program to combine on-campus coursework in scientific theory with off-campus work in science and technology research.
Participants experience the entire research cycle from start to finish. They read the most current literature in their field, draft and execute a detailed research plan, and deliver conference-style oral and written reports on their findings.
RSI scholars first participate in a week of intensive STEM classes with accomplished professors. The heart of RSI is the five-week research internship where students conduct individual projects under the tutelage of mentors who are experienced scientists and researchers. During the final week of RSI, students prepare written and oral presentations on their research projects.

They are currently recruiting mentors for this summer! Here are some important updates and information regarding this summer's Semper Fi Odyssey Youth Camp:
· We are not doing the family style camp; we are maintaining the same in-person leadership, and mentoring program as we have in the past. Mentors and junior mentors are ages 14-18 (highschool sophomores, juniors, and seniors). Campers are ages 8-13 (grades 3-9). Junior mentor ages are tentative as we find ways to make sure every camper has a mentor!
· Camp will be held at the same location as years past: Outdoor Odyssey at Roaring Run, 450 Boy Scout Rd., Boswell, PA. Pickup and drop off locations will still be at local areas in Camp Lejeune and Quantico (specific address/times TBD).
· Currently our prospective dates are July 7th-17th (mentor/jr. mentor) and July 11th-17th (camper).
· Regarding Covid-19, we are taking all precautions to stay safe while following CDC guidelines. Cabin sizes will be smaller to promote social distancing as best as possible. All/most of our activities will be held outside.
Please feel free to browse Outdoor Odyssey's website for more information on the organization, as well as pictures of the youth camp in the past!

The American Red Cross is excited to announce that we are sponsoring a new program for the youths as young as 13 through young adults. This program is the International Humanitarian Law Youth Action Campaign, which educates teens about international humanitarian law (IHL) and empowers them to explore IHL through peer-to-peer campaigns. This year's theme is Education in War. This could be a great opportunity for volunteer hours as well as, getting the youths involved with their fellow students (virtually) to help spread awareness. Also, this opens up opportunities for them to get a chance to go to a summit in Washington, DC.
