K.OA.2 - I can use using objects or drawings to solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10.
K.OA.4 - I can find the number that makes 10 when added to a given number that is less than 10.
How to Use Ten Frames- You can DRAW or PRINT ten frames
Activity #1: Think of a number from 1-10 and say it out loud. Have the student represent the number using counters on the ten frame. Continue this until you have practiced numbers 1-10.
Activity #2: Find something to use as counters (paper clips, candy, cotton balls, etc.). Place a certain number of pieces on the ten frame. Then have the student identify “How many squares are empty?” Identifying the empty squares helps to see which two numbers make 10. Have the student say “I have 4. I need 6 more to get 10.”
Activity #3: Use the ten frames to find the sum of two numbers and write the equation. (For example: Use 2 different items or colors to be able to visually see-place 4 counters, then place another 6 counters on your ten frame. 4 + 6 = 10.)
Activity #4: Create a word problem for students to solve addition and subtraction problems within 10. Allow them to use the ten frame and counters to solve. For example:
Addition: “4 bees fly onto the flower. Then 3 more bees fly onto the flower. How many bees are there in all?
Subtraction: “There 7 birds in the field. 4 birds fly away. How many birds are in the field?)
