5.NF.1 - Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad +bc)/bd).
The Fractions app lets students use a bar or circle to represent, compare, and perform operations with fractions with denominators from 1 to 100. Choose the fraction model and number of equal parts. Use a color to select specific parts to show a fraction of the whole. Reveal or hide numeric labels as needed. Superimpose fractions upon each other to compare fractions or see equal parts.
Math War
If you dont have any numbered cards - Step 1: Use a marker to print numbers from 1 to 12 (one on each card -- and write BIG). You can use the same number more than once. This will make things more fun as you play the game. Decorate the backs of the cards, if you'd like.
Step 2: Deal out all the cards to the players until all the cards have been distributed evenly. Each person makes a pile of his or her cards.
Step 3: Each person holds the pile in their hand face down. Each player draws from the top of his pile and lays a card out, face up, on the table.
Step 4: The first person to yell out the correct product of the numbers on the cards wins that round of play and takes the cards.
Step 5: The game continues until there are no more cards to flip. The person with the most cards at the end, wins the game.
