Parents: Learning and supporting your child's use of AAC can be intimidating at first. Below are some resources intended to help you get started with some best practice strategies while working with your child at home.
For specific device training, reference the device tutorials and manuals @ the AAC device page
📱 Learn how the device works
Take time to explore your child’s AAC app or device. Know where things are and how to use it in everyday life. Learn how to use the LAMP Word Finder, Proloquo2Go Search Word, or TD Snap Search option!
🗣️ Use it while you talk
Show your child how to use the AAC by pointing to words while you talk. This is called “modeling.” It helps them learn.
🧍♂️🧍♀️ Keep it with your child
The device should be available all day—just like their voice. Make sure it’s charged and close by.
⏳ Give time to talk
After you model a word, wait. Give your child time to find and use words on their own.
🎉 Celebrate all communication
Smile, cheer, or give a high five when they use AAC—even if it’s just one word. It builds confidence!
📅 Use it during daily routines
Use AAC during meals, play, bath time, car rides—everyday moments are perfect for learning.
🤝 Talk with the team
Share what you notice at home with teachers and therapists. Working together helps your child grow.
❤️ Let your child say what they want
They should have words for feelings, favorites, jokes, and even things they don’t like!
🧑🤝🧑 Find other families
You’re not alone. Talking with other AAC families can give ideas and support.
🧠 AAC helps speech—not hurts it
Using AAC doesn’t stop speech. It often helps kids talk more over time.
