Augmented communicators describe a “good” communication partner as patient, motivated, interested and comfortable with all methods of communication. MASTER PAL is an instructional scaffold intended to improve the skills of communication partners that combines highly effective practices and strategies known to support language and communication development for AAC users. It is recommended that school teams become familiar with the MASTER PAL strategies of Modeling, Accepting Multiple Modalities, Statements More Than Questions, Time, Engage Naturally, Response Not Required, Presume Potential, Appropriate Prompting, and Let the Child Lead. Coordinate with school Admin, SPED ISS and AT-ISS for possible release time to review the learning modules.

Develop Strategic Plans and Routines
Use a Prompt Hierarchy:
Prompt hierarchies are essential elements of any AAC implementation toolkit. Communication partners should use them fluently, moving fluidly up and down the hierarchy in response to the student’s response. The following AAC prompting guides detail the types and levels of prompts that you should be using with your student. This guide is also helpful when documenting progress or attainment of AAC goals.Listen: S'MoRRES podcast

Expanding Expression Tool:
Based on a multi-sensory mnemonic used to help elicit and expand word choice, topics, organization and comprehension. This link provides a description of how this strategy can be used to support AAC users. We often call this type of strategy-descriptive teaching, which allows AAC users and communication partners to talk about something, even if the specific word is missing from the AAC vocabulary.Read: EET + AAC = OMG
