Jamie Beck, J.D. is the owner of J.D. Beck Consulting, a boutique consulting form that focuses on supporting, attorneys, law firms and organizations working with survivors of human trafficking, domestic and sexual violence and child abuse. Ms. Beck’s consulting practice provides case consultation, expert witness services, and program development. Ms. Beck also offers customized trainings on a variety of subjects within her areas of expertise including human trafficking and trauma-informed practices.
Ms. Beck previously served as the President & Managing Attorney of Free to Thrive, a Southern California-based nonprofit organization with the mission of advancing justice and transforming the legal system for human trafficking survivors through legal services, education and policy advocacy. She has over a decade of experience representing human trafficking survivors in a variety of legal matters including criminal vacatur (P.C. § 236.14); domestic violence restraining orders, child custody, divorce, name and gender changes and victim’s rights representation.
Ms. Beck also serves as an Adjunct Lecturer in Law at USC Gould School of Law and Pepperdine Caruso School of Law teaching a course on “Trauma-Informed Legal Skills.” She has trained thousands of attorneys, students, stakeholders and community members on human trafficking and trauma-informed practices.
Ms. Beck also practiced civil litigation at Procopio, Cory, Hargeaves & Savitch LLP and served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Michael M. Anello, Federal District Court Judge for the Southern District of California.
Ms. Beck is a past president of Lawyers Club of San Diego and Co-Chaired the Lawyers Club Human Trafficking Collaborative. Under Ms. Beck’s leadership, Lawyers Club successfully advocated for a law to help human trafficking survivors clear criminal convictions related to their exploitation, now codified under California Penal Code § 236.14. This law is a powerful tool to help survivors remove barriers and get a fresh start. She was also involved in advocating for AB 124, which expanded California’s affirmative defense and vacatur laws to survivors of interpersonal and sexual violence in 2021, which was codified under P.C. §§ 236.15 and 236.24.
Ms. Beck graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law where she was a member of the San Diego Law Review. Ms. Beck attended law school because she wanted to help others and she knew that the legal system is a powerful tool to do so.
Outside of her professional work, Ms. Beck enjoys yoga, hiking, meditation, watching and listening to musicals, reading, and spending quality time with her wife, their two dogs and their cat.
