Film Noir
PROJECT PROPOSAL
Even though joining this course late, I have made progress and learned new skills through the year. Joining in late November I had to catch up on work doing so I improved my editing and camera handling skills as shown within my introduction video. In my previous year my camera work was much better. I have improved my editing with a green screen. My intro is entirely shot with one and unlike the previous year I did all my editing without support and reviewing my year 1 intro and year 2 there is much improvement. Moving past intro my show reel was a montage of my favourite filmed moments with friends and classmates the clips are edited to match up with the song Mr. Blue Sky by E.L.O. I did most of the camera work using the Panasonic Lumix s1h camera for my group’s feature film movie video of “The Boys are back in town to kill you” using v log format which i hadn’t used before and had to learn for the project.
For my project I'm making a film noir theme in the late 1930 early 1940 era of crime and film. It will be following an ex private detective whose going through grief after the missing appearance of another member of his family. The detective is trying to solve the case but keeps falling into bad habits along the way due to the grief. The short film will be taking place back and forth between a bar setting of the P.I telling his story to an unknown party and the story being told unfolding and being shown. I will be taking inspiration from Orson Welles and Alfie Hitchcock for cinematography and settings. I will also be taking inspiration from short film festivals film creators such as Thomas (TomSka) Ridgwell and monomedia for their respective film noir short films/ episodes. I'll be using their comedic aspects and practical effects. The P.I will be narrating over the majority of the scenes accompanied by jazz swing music set from the film noir era (being 1930-40s) and will be used to help set the pace and mood for most scenes too. So far i’m unaware if this will follow a murder mystery style or if i’ll be focusing on the grief of the detective and how it affects him and the people who relied on his support on cases he still did not close.
I will be doing this project with support from other film students in the class to help build sets and work cameras and i will also be requesting help form the music and acting department at the Bucks Amersham College Group.
Due to multiple different failures during FMP season this project was a roller coaster. From illness to mental strain this project isn't even finished and has been one of my most stressful moments during this course and yet I did not stop as of writing this it is 19.05.23 at 01:44 in the morning after a long day of trying to get the equipment needed to shoot my project. Only now have I finalised my script ready to be shot over the next 2 days morning to night both days with only small breaks, will I achieve my goal in 2 days who knows? However no matter what I have finished my script that took so much energy out of me that I had not only been affected by mental health but by physical too. I will update this log below when the shoot is over and once more when the fmp is over to me and everyone who's helping this project i wish us luck and thank you.
