Whole Class Novels: Shiloh and Home of the Brave
Using the above novels in conjunction with student selected book club books, students will focus on the following:
Summarizing text
Analyzing how characters respond to challenges and conflict
Determining a theme(s) based on details that support a particular life lesson
Comparing and contrasting characters, settings, ideas, and events
Describing how point of view influences how a story is told
Using specific details from a text(s) to support one's thinking and analysis
Word Study: Through an assortment of activities, students will examine specific Greek and Latin Roots. During Trimester 1, we will explore the following:
Unit 1- hydr, aqua/aqu, mar/mer
Unit 3- mem, ology, sci
Unit 7- mob/mot, tract, tend/tens/tent
Unit 8- onym, hosp, host

Writing: We will focus on narrative writing during the 1st trimester. Grammar and conventions lessons will be embedded in our narrative writing activities.
Literature - Continue to reinforce literature skills from Trimester 1.
Informational -Skills will include:
Identifying multiple main ideas in text
Identifying key details that support each main idea
Explain how details support main ideas
Summarizing text including main ideas and key details
Identifying overall structure or organization of a text
Identifying author’s point of view in text
Identifying author’s main argument or point in a text
Analyzing reasons and evidence an author gives to support a point

Unit 10 - plur, multi/poly, mega
Unit 14 - hex/sex, sept, oct
Unit 15 - non/nov, deci/deca, cent
Unit 16- anim, carn, phys
Unit 17 - fals/fall, cert/cred, phob
Writing: We will focus on informational writing during trimester 2. Grammar and conventions lessons will continue to be embedded as our focus shifts to this mode of writing.
Skills from trimester 1 & 2 will continue to be reinforced and the skills below will be added:
Informational -
Identifying & explaining relationships between key details
Comparing & contrasting the structures of two texts
Comparing & contrasting author’s point of view across multiple texts
Using common information from multiple texts to explain a topic or idea
Literature -
Identifying structure of poems and dramas.
Explain how parts of story, drama or poem connects to other parts of the same text
Comparing & contrasting two or more characters, settings. and/or events
Comparing & contrasting theme across multiple texts
